High / low are average daily temperatures (°C). “Feels” reflects how hot or cold it feels, allowing for humidity.
Northern Taiwan (Taipei, Keelung, Yilan)
February often feels like an extension of January: chilly, damp air from the northeast keeps temperatures in the low teens Celsius in the capital and makes sidewalks slick. Lunar New Year falls in this window some years, packing trains and flights-book early if you plan temple visits or want to travel to Keelung for the Matsu or seafood. Yangmingshan’s early cherry and plum blossoms can appear, rewarding hikers who brave the wind; bring warm layers and waterproof shoes.
Central Taiwan & West Coast (Taichung, Changhua, Sun Moon Lake)
February can be pleasantly cool and mostly dry in Taichung, with clearer skies than the north and early spring blossoming in lower elevations. Sun Moon Lake hosts quieter trails and the city’s night markets stay active; if you time it right you might catch early tea harvest activity on the hills above Changhua. The west coast breeze is gentle, but keep a sweater for cooler evenings along the coastal plains.
Southern Taiwan & Kenting (Kaohsiung, Tainan, Pingtung, Kenting Peninsula)
February stays warm in the south, and Kenting’s beaches are comfortable for swimming more often than elsewhere on the island; this is a good month for whale-watching departures from Kaohsiung. The Lunar New Year often brings a burst of travel and bustling street celebrations in Tainan-book restaurants and accommodation early. Rain is uncommon but sudden squalls are possible; a light windbreaker suffices most days.
Eastern Taiwan & East Coast (Hualien, Taitung, Taroko Gorge, East Rift)
February often brings clearer skies and mild temperatures in Taitung, making it a fine time for the coast’s cultural festivals and for cycling along the East Rift valley. Whale-watching trips from Hualien and Taitung start to resume with calmer seas on many days, though sudden squalls happen. For inland hot-spring visits and lowland trekking, layer clothing for chilly mornings and comfortable afternoons.
High Mountains & Central Range (Alishan, Yushan, Hehuanshan, Cross-Island Highways)
February retains winter conditions at altitude with frequent frost and periodic light snow on the highest trails; Alishan’s famous sunrise viewing draws photographers who tolerate early cold. The Lunar New Year sometimes coincides with mountain travel surges, so book rail or lodge spots in advance and expect icy walking conditions at dawn. Daytime sun can warm valleys quickly, but evenings remain bitterly cold above 2,500 meters.
