High / low are average daily temperatures (°C). “Feels” reflects how hot or cold it feels, allowing for humidity.
Northern Taiwan (Taipei, Keelung, Yilan)
April brings more warmth and the first really sunny days feel tropical compared with winter; daytime highs often reach the low 20s°C in Taipei, and cherry blossoms at Yangmingshan and hot-spring towns around Beitou draw crowds. April also teases the start of the plum-rain (meiyu) season later in May, so plan flexible outdoor days. Coastal Keelung and the north coast have brisk sea breezes-great for a brisk walk along the harbor but expect gusty afternoons.
Central Taiwan & West Coast (Taichung, Changhua, Sun Moon Lake)
April brings warm, sunny days ideal for exploring Taichung’s museums, Rainbow Village and the Gaomei Wetlands at sunset (watch for strong sea breezes). The weather is often fine for longer day trips into the hills, and early mountain cherry blossoms at Alishan begin to attract photographers. Expect moderate humidity; afternoon showers are possible but not yet frequent.
Southern Taiwan & Kenting (Kaohsiung, Tainan, Pingtung, Kenting Peninsula)
April brings hot, sunny days and a jump in temperatures across southern plains; afternoons can be oppressively humid and are best spent near water, such as Cijin Island or the Kenting coast. Orchid Island and Green Island enjoy reliably warm conditions, popular with divers and snorkelers. Expect local hotels to start filling on weekends as Taiwanese travelers head south to escape cooler northern weather.
Eastern Taiwan & East Coast (Hualien, Taitung, Taroko Gorge, East Rift)
April brings comfortably warm weather and fewer heavy rains than the north during early spring; the East Rift valley blooms and mountain trails around Ruisui and Luye are excellent for paragliding and tea farm visits. Hualien’s coastal cliffs show clear sea views, and ferry service to Green Island and Orchid Island is more reliable. Pack sun protection for daytime activities, plus a light rain layer for occasional showers.
High Mountains & Central Range (Alishan, Yushan, Hehuanshan, Cross-Island Highways)
April brings milder daytime temperatures in the montane zones and the high mountain cherry and rhododendron blooms start to appear-Alishan sees a surge in visitors for sakura and sunrises. Snow is rare at the lower highland viewpoints, but higher passes may still have icy patches early in the month. Trail conditions improve quickly; hikers should still carry warm layers for cold nights and rapid mountain weather shifts.
