Northern Taiwan (Taipei, Keelung, Yilan)

July is hot, sticky and often interrupted by typhoon systems passing to the south or northeast-days in Taipei regularly reach the low 30s°C with high humidity that makes walking on Tamsui riverside uncomfortable. Keelung and Yilan can be cloudier with bands of rain; the north coast sees strong onshore winds that create choppy seas. If you travel now, book museums and indoor attractions in the afternoon and expect heavy summer crowds and packed hotel rooms near major events.

Central Taiwan & West Coast (Taichung, Changhua, Sun Moon Lake)

July brings full summer heat to the west coast with frequent afternoon storms; Taichung’s urban heat means seek shaded parks or air-conditioned exhibits during the hottest hours. Coastal towns around Changhua may be breezier, but swimming at local beaches is often interrupted by storm warnings. Cultural festivals and night markets run late into the evening-carry mosquito repellent and light summer clothing.

Southern Taiwan & Kenting (Kaohsiung, Tainan, Pingtung, Kenting Peninsula)

July is peak summer-intense sun, high humidity and the island frequently under watch for tropical storms or typhoons that can disrupt travel and close beaches. Kaohsiung’s urban heat is significant, so plan indoor museum visits in the afternoon; evening is the better time for beachside bars in Kenting. Mosquitoes are abundant near wetlands and rice paddies, so insect repellent is a must for dusk outings.

Eastern Taiwan & East Coast (Hualien, Taitung, Taroko Gorge, East Rift)

July brings strong summer heat and the area is squarely inside typhoon season; Taroko Gorge can experience dramatic cloudbursts and stream levels can rise quickly, closing hiking access. Coastal Taitung remains popular with domestic surfers and outdoor events, but ferry and intercity bus services are vulnerable when a typhoon passes. Avoid narrow rivers and heed local trail closures; book accommodation with flexible cancellation policies.

High Mountains & Central Range (Alishan, Yushan, Hehuanshan, Cross-Island Highways)

July is warm in lower montane zones but still cool at alpine elevations; daytime temps up high remain pleasant compared with the plains, though storms can arise suddenly and lightning is a real hazard on exposed ridgelines. Mountain refuges can fill with domestic hikers escaping coastal heat-book in advance if you want to stay at lodge facilities. Bring wet-weather gear and be cautious stepping onto wet rock and trails.
