Northern Taiwan (Taipei, Keelung, Yilan)
August continues as the peak of summer heat and the most active typhoon month; take precautions when a typhoon alert is issued-public transport and flights are frequently suspended and mountain roads can be blocked. Taipei’s evenings offer relief in air-conditioned restaurants, but daytimes are best for riverfront walks or night markets after sunset. Yilan’s beaches can be stormy yet dramatic; avoid river gorges after heavy rains due to rapid rises.
Central Taiwan & West Coast (Taichung, Changhua, Sun Moon Lake)
August remains hot and humid with continued typhoon potential; days in Taichung commonly top 30°C and humidity can feel oppressive for outdoor sightseeing. This is a busy travel month for Taiwanese families-accommodation near Sun Moon Lake and coastal resorts fills up fast. If a typhoon approaches, expect mass cancellations on mountain bus services and ferry routes.
Southern Taiwan & Kenting (Kaohsiung, Tainan, Pingtung, Kenting Peninsula)
August keeps the island hot with frequent thunderstorms and possible typhoon impacts; ferry services and small-island access are most vulnerable this month. If a typhoon approaches, expect the immediate closure of Kenting National Park access points and suspension of night market activity. For quiet mornings on the beach and less risk of storms, try early starts and book refundable accommodation.
Eastern Taiwan & East Coast (Hualien, Taitung, Taroko Gorge, East Rift)
August continues the summer pattern of heat, humidity and possible typhoons; afternoon storms are frequent and the sea can become choppy, affecting island access to Green and Orchid islands. Taitung’s hot springs and lowland cultural sites are pleasant in the morning, but midday calls for shade or indoor museums. The East Coast’s wide vistas are most reliable on the days between storm systems.
High Mountains & Central Range (Alishan, Yushan, Hehuanshan, Cross-Island Highways)
August often features thick cloud, heavy rain and frequent thunderstorms-summit attempts on Yushan are risky because of lightning and sudden downpours that can trigger landslides. The best strategy is to schedule hikes on short weather windows and avoid exposed ridges during stormy conditions. Lower mountain villages still offer cooler evenings and a respite from the plains’ humidity when the sun holds.
