Ta Nei
Archaeological Site Small Angkorian temple near Angkor Wat, Khmer architecture
A late 12th-13th-century Angkor temple in Siem Reap’s archaeological area, offering Khmer bas-reliefs, tree-overgrown galleries and quieter ruin exploration.
Ta Nei is a small Angkor-era temple in Siem Reap province, Cambodia, constructed in the late 12th century during the reign of King Jayavarman VII. It is part of the Angkor Archaeological Park and is known for its compact, moated plan.
The temple comprises a single enclosure built of laterite and sandstone surrounded by a moat and forest, with architectural details characteristic of Jayavarman VII’s Buddhist monuments. Many structures remain less-restored than at major Angkor sites, so visitors encounter a more intimate, vegetation-tinged complex.
Ta Nei was established as a Buddhist shrine under Jayavarman VII; over subsequent centuries the site fell into partial ruin and was reclaimed by vegetation, with only limited modern conservation work. Present-day access follows footpaths that enter the temple enclosure and cross the moat.
The temple lies within the Angkor Archaeological Park near the town of Siem Reap in northwestern Cambodia.
- Style: Built in the late 12th century during the reign of Jayavarman VII, using laterite and sandstone and arranged around a surrounding moat.
- Conservation: Less extensively restored than Angkor's largest monuments, offering a quieter site where original stonework is often visible in situ.
