History & Culture of Spean Thmor#
Spean Thmor - the name means “stone bridge” in modern Khmer - is an ancient bridge that once spanned the Siem Reap River, on the road between Ta Keo and the Victory Gate of Angkor Thom. Dozens of such bridges once carried the ancient highways running east and west of Angkor, but this is the most convenient for most visitors today.
The bridge was built and rebuilt over the centuries using leftover brick from the temples of Angkor, and its corbelled (false) arches offer a rare insight into Khmer bridge construction. The course of the Siem Reap River has since shifted dramatically, so the bridge now stands just beside the water rather than over it, ringed by towering trees whose roots have pushed through the stone and begun to crumble it - evidence of how much narrower the river has become since imperial times.
