Neak Pean is a small artificial-island temple in the Angkor archaeological park in northwestern Cambodia, constructed in the late 12th century under King Jayavarman VII. It was conceived as a water-based shrine with a central sanctuary on an artificial island.
The monument’s plan centres on a circular island surrounded by pools and linked channels; the layout symbolises a mythical healing lake and was used for ritual purification. Architectural features include a raised terrace and water-management elements carved from sandstone.
Neak Pean was built as part of the king’s network of Buddhist monuments and is commonly interpreted as a healing temple or a symbolic representation of the mythic lake Anavatapta. Its compact plan and waterworks stand out among the Angkor group of monuments.
