Despite its location along the busy highway connecting Phnom Penh and Vietnam, Svay Rieng is a small, peaceful province that is one of poorest in Cambodia.

There is little reason for visitors to stop in Svay Rieng and there are very few services for those who wish to do so, though Bavet, the gateway to Vietnam, hosts a lively marketplace.

Svay Rieng, the eponymous capital of the province, is a pretty and quiet town with riverside drink and food stalls along the banks of the Vai Kou River. If you need a place to spend a night before or after crossing from Vietnam, its a decent place to stop as there are a few interesting attractions nearby, including the Prey Ba Sak area and Prasat Prasat temple among the most noteworthy.
