Myanmar’s most sacred site is a dazzling golden stupa crowning a Yangon hilltop, ringed by shrines and glittering with thousands of diamonds. At dusk, as pilgrims circle its glowing terrace and monks chant, it becomes one of Asia’s most moving spiritual spectacles.

A gilded mountain temple overlooking Chiang Mai, reached by a long naga-flanked staircase and enshrining a relic said to have chosen its own hilltop. Its golden chedi, ringing bells and hazy valley views make it northern Thailand’s most revered pilgrimage site.

Home to Bangkok’s giant reclining Buddha, its soles inlaid with mother-of-pearl, this sprawling temple is also the birthplace of traditional Thai massage. Rows of Buddha images, spired chedis and quiet cloisters make it a serene counterpoint to the city outside.

A giant gilded boulder balanced impossibly on a cliff edge, seemingly held in place by a single Buddha hair, is one of Myanmar’s holiest pilgrimage sites. Pilgrims trek up the mountain to press gold leaf onto the rock and pray as mist swirls around the shrine.

The most beautiful of Luang Prabang’s monasteries, its sweeping low roofs, gilt stencils and glittering tree-of-life mosaic epitomise classic Lao temple art. Set near the Mekong, it anchors the sacred, monk-filled atmosphere of the old royal capital.

Within Bangkok’s Grand Palace, Thailand’s holiest temple enshrines the revered Emerald Buddha atop a towering golden altar. Glittering mosaic spires, mythical guardian statues and dazzling murals make this the ceremonial and spiritual centre of the kingdom.

Carved from rose-pink sandstone, this jewel-box Khmer temple near Angkor is celebrated for the finest, most intricate stone carving in Cambodia. Its exquisite deities and lintels, remarkably preserved, reward the short journey out from the main temple complex.

Southeast Asia’s largest mosque soars over central Jakarta in a vast modernist hall of gleaming marble and steel that can hold over two hundred thousand worshippers. Facing a cathedral across the road, it stands as a symbol of Indonesian religious tolerance.

The world’s largest Buddhist monument is also a living pilgrimage site, its terraces representing the soul’s ascent to enlightenment. Climbing past narrative reliefs and hundreds of Buddhas to the summit stupas at dawn is a profoundly meditative experience.

Beyond its royal grandeur, the walled citadel and the pagodas along the Perfume River, including the seven-tiered Thien Mu, form a serene Buddhist landscape. Incense, lotus ponds and pine-shaded emperors’ tombs give Hue a contemplative, deeply spiritual air.
