Wat Rong Khun, commonly called the White Temple, is a contemporary Buddhist temple near Chiang Rai created and funded by Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat. Construction began in 1997 and the site is a privately owned temple complex open to visitors.
The temple’s principal building is an ornate white ubosot clad in white plaster and crushed glass, with a sculpted bridge, outreaching hands and a surreal entry sequence representing the cycle from desire to enlightenment. Interior murals blend traditional Buddhist imagery with modern pop-culture references and global themes.
Chalermchai conceived, designed and continues to oversee additions to the complex; the site functions as both a place of worship and an ongoing art project, drawing national and international visitors.
The temple is located a short drive from the city of Chiang Rai in northern Thailand, set in a suburban-rural zone that is readily reachable by road from the city.
- Artist and construction: Open to the public since the late 1990s and constructed under the direction and funding of artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, who continues to expand the complex.
- Design feature: The main ubosot is finished in brilliant white plaster with mirrored glass inlays, intended to symbolise the purity of the Buddha and to reflect light for dramatic effect.

Tips for Visiting Wat Rong Khun #
- Arrive early (before 9:00 a.m.) or late afternoon to avoid the mid‑day tour-bus surge and harsh glare off the white surfaces.
- Photography is prohibited inside the main ubosot; take time to study the murals from the doorway-then walk around the exterior details and mirror mosaics for better photos.
- Respect the dress code at Thai temples: shoulders and knees should be covered before entering indoor sanctums.
- Cross the bridge slowly and look back at the sea of outreaching hands; many visitors hurry straight to the chapel and miss the small sculptures and carved reliefs on the grounds.
