Wat Phra Kaew
Temple Thailand's sacred temple housing the Emerald Buddha
Inside the Grand Palace complex, Wat Phra Kaew enshrines the Emerald Buddha; visitors view the richly decorated royal chapel, mural cycles and ceremonial architecture.
Wat Phra Kaew, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, is the royal chapel within Bangkok’s Grand Palace complex and houses the highly venerated Emerald Buddha statue carved from a green stone.
The temple functions as Thailand’s principal royal shrine - the small Emerald Buddha is clothed by the king in seasonal robes during formal ceremonies, and the surrounding buildings feature extensive mural cycles and ornate gilded architecture. Access to the main chapel is governed by a strict dress code and indoor photography restrictions.
The complex was established when Bangkok became the capital under King Rama I in the late 18th century and has since served as the principal ceremonial and religious site connected to the Thai monarchy.
Situated on the eastern edge of the Grand Palace in Bangkok’s historic district, Wat Phra Kaew is visited in combination with the palace and nearby temples and monuments.
- Rules and etiquette: The Emerald Buddha is the temple's principal relic and is regarded as Thailand's palladium; visitors should observe the strict dress code and rules inside the chapel, and photography is restricted indoors.
- Function and history: Built as the Grand Palace chapel under King Rama I in the late 18th century, the site remains an active royal and religious centre within the palace complex.
What to See #
- Emerald Buddha Chapel: The main ordination hall (ubosot) houses the Emerald Buddha, a small highly venerated figure clothed seasonally by the Thai monarch in state ceremonies.
- Mural cycles and royal art: Extensive mural cycles, including scenes from the Ramakien, cover the walls of the compound's buildings and provide large-scale examples of Thai royal art and storytelling.
How to Get to Wat Phra Kaew #
Wat Phra Kaew (the Temple of the Emerald Buddha) is inside the Grand Palace precinct on Rattanakosin Island. Reach the area by Chao Phraya River Express (get off at Tha Chang or Tha Tien piers and walk 5-10 minutes) or by MRT (Sanam Chai station is about a 5-10 minute walk). Many visitors approach on foot from nearby Khao San Road or by taxi/ride-hail to Na Phra Lan Road at the Grand Palace entrance.
Tips for Visiting Wat Phra Kaew #
- Get there right at opening to beat the large guided groups that arrive mid-morning; the compound is part of the Grand Palace complex, so combine an early visit to avoid overlapping peak crowds.
- Respect that photography is restricted in the Emerald Buddha's ordination hall (ubosot) and plan to spend time exploring the surrounding viharns and museum displays which many visitors skip.
- Buy tickets online or arrive before the main tour buses; guided audio tours or a local licensed guide will point out subtle iconography and ceremonial spaces that are otherwise easy to miss.
