Mahé - Victoria, Beau Vallon and West Coast

Oppressive humidity and frequent tropical showers make the west coast sticky in January; daytime highs hover around 29-31°C while evenings stay warm. Victoria can feel steamy between quick downpours that punctuate long sunny spells, and Beau Vallon remains lively with beachgoers despite occasional rain. Sea conditions on the sheltered west beaches are usually good for swimming and snorkeling, though occasional swell from northwest winds can roughen the surf; pack light rainwear, reef-safe sunscreen and a hat, and expect busy ferry timetables around holiday dates.

Mahé Highlands - Morne Seychellois and upland trails

Fog and drizzly showers are common at higher elevations in January; the highlands feel noticeably cooler than the coast, with temperatures often in the low 20s°C and a damp chill on exposed ridges. Trails such as the Mission and Trois Frères pick up water from frequent cloudbursts, making paths slippery but the rainforest lush and fragrant. For photographers and birdwatchers this is rewarding despite the wet; carry waterproof hiking boots, a warm mid-layer and gaiters to handle muddy sections.

Praslin & La Digue - Inner granitic islands and beaches

A very warm, humid feel dominates Praslin and La Digue in January, with quick tropical showers alternating with bright sun; Vallée de Mai’s canopy steams after rain, and Anse Lazio and Anse Source d’Argent hug the waterline with many sunbathers. Sea temperatures are very comfortable for snorkeling and boats to Cocos Island run regularly when weather allows, though afternoon storms can briefly curtail excursions. Pack light cottons, waterproof sandals, and expect lively beach crowds and busy inter-island transfers.

Outer Islands & Atolls - Aldabra, Farquhar, Alphonse and more remote coralline islands

Heat on the outer atolls is intense in January and freshwater is scarce on many coral islands; Aldabra and Farquhar are hot and humid with strong sun and episodic tropical downpours. The remoteness makes logistics sensitive to weather - boat charters and small aircraft can be disrupted during squalls - and visitors must be self-sufficient with water and sun protection. Wildlife viewing (giant tortoises on Aldabra) can be excellent after rains when birds and seals are active, but expect rough seas on exposed passages.
