How to Get to Pueblito del Río#

Pueblito del Río (Las Piedras barrio-pueblo) is most easily reached by road from SJU or other regional airports. Public buses and shared vans serve the east coast, but renting a car or taking a private transfer is the most reliable option.

By Air

Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU): The main international airport for eastern Puerto Rico; Pueblito del Río (Las Piedras barrio-pueblo) is about 35-50 minutes’ drive east of SJU depending on traffic. Taxis for that distance are available, but many travelers prefer to rent a car; expect airport-to-Las Piedras taxi fares in the $40-$70 range.

Antonio Rivera Rodríguez Airport (VQS) / Ceiba (limited service): Ceiba/VQS has seasonal or limited flights and is farther away; most visitors will find SJU the most convenient entry point for Las Piedras and eastern municipalities.

By Train & Bus

Train: Puerto Rico’s Tren Urbano does not serve Las Piedras or the eastern municipalities; it is confined to the San Juan metro area.

Bus: The island has local bus lines and shared vans that connect San Juan and smaller towns on the east coast. Public buses and ‘públicos’ can reach Las Piedras from the San Juan metro or from Fajardo region; travel times from San Juan are typically 40-70 minutes depending on route and transfers, with low fares for local services.

How to Get Around Pueblito del Río#

Travel to Las Piedras is by road from San Juan’s airport; car rental or private transfer is recommended for convenience. Local buses and públicos exist but are slower and less predictable.

  • Car (rental) ($30-$70/day) - Renting a car is the most practical and flexible option to reach and explore Las Piedras and nearby beaches and mountains. Roads are generally well-maintained; allow time for weekday commuter traffic around San Juan and Humacao.
  • Taxi / Private transfer ($40-$80) - Taxis and private transfers from SJU or San Juan are door-to-door and more comfortable than buses for luggage or groups. Agree on a price before starting the trip for longer intercity journeys.
  • Public bus / Públicos ($1-$10) - Local buses and shared vans connect towns along the eastern corridor. These are the cheapest option but can require transfers and flexible timing; schedules are not always strictly followed.
  • Regional ferries / boats ($2-$10) - There are ferry services from Fajardo to nearby islands (Culebra, Vieques) but they are not relevant to Las Piedras directly. If island-hopping, plan extra travel time to reach ferry ports.
  • Walking - Las Piedras’ barrio-pueblo is compact and walkable for visiting the plaza, church, and nearby shops. For attractions outside town you will need transport.
