How to Get to Libohovë#

Libohovë (Gjirokastër County) is most practically reached by road from Tirana, Ioannina (Greece) or Gjirokastër. There is no reliable rail connection, so expect to use buses, minibuses or taxis for the final leg.

By Air

Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza (TIA): Tirana is the main international airport for southern Albania, and from there you can travel by road to Libohovë (approximately 2-3 hours depending on route). A taxi from Tirana Airport to Libohovë will be lengthy and relatively expensive (~€80-120). Alternatively fly into Ioannina (IOA) in Greece and cross the border by road if that suits your itinerary.

Ioannina Airport (IOA): Ioannina in Greece is closer by road to Libohovë than Tirana for some routes; cross‑border transfers and local buses/taxis operate but schedules and border procedures can add time. Driving from IOA to Libohovë takes roughly 1-1.5 hours by car (depending on crossing).

By Train & Bus

Train: Albania has only limited passenger rail services; trains are not a practical option for reaching Libohovë.

Bus / Minibus: Regional minibuses (furgons) and buses run between Gjirokastër, Tepelenë and other local centres; from Gjirokastër you can get onward transport to Libohovë by bus or taxi. • Regional bus / minibus (ALL 200-800 (€1.5-€6)) - Local minibuses connect Gjirokastër, Tepelenë and surrounding villages with Libohovë. They are the cheapest option but operate on flexible timetables-arrive at main terminals and ask for the next departure. Rides between nearby towns commonly cost a few euros.
  • Taxi (intercity) (€40-€120) - A direct taxi from Tirana or Ioannina provides a reliable door-to-door route to Libohovë, especially outside regular bus hours. Expect higher fares for the long cross‑region transfer; negotiate or confirm rates in advance.
  • Car hire (€25+/day (rental)) - Renting a car (pickup in Tirana or Ioannina) is the most flexible way to reach Libohovë and explore the mountainous southern region. Roads vary from highway to narrow mountain passes; drive carefully in bad weather.
  • Local taxi / dolmuş (ALL 100-400 (€0.8-€3)) - Short local taxi runs or shared dolmuş-style minibuses operate for nearby villages and are useful for short hops. Informal fares are common and drivers will often wait until enough passengers are onboard.
