Gjirokastër Fortress is a large hilltop fortress overlooking the town of Gjirokastër in southern Albania and is a central historical monument of the city. It dominates the town’s skyline and contains museum displays within its walls.

The site has medieval origins and was progressively rebuilt and expanded under various local and Ottoman authorities; the present form reflects significant Ottoman-era and later alterations. Over time the fortress has served defensive, administrative and storage functions, and it now houses museums and visitor facilities.

The fortress sits on a steep hill above the UNESCO-listed old town of Gjirokastër in Gjirokastër County, southern Albania, commanding views over the surrounding valley and within walking distance of the town’s stone-roofed neighborhoods.

What to See#

• Fortress complex and museum: The castle complex includes ramparts and an internal courtyard that houses the Museum of Weapons, displaying historical armaments and local military objects.
• Panoramic terrace and towers: A panoramic terrace and surviving towers provide wide views over Gjirokastër town and the Drinos valley to the north and west.

Gjirokastër is about 240 km south of Tirana. From Tirana, take the SH4 highway toward Fier, then follow regional roads SH8/SH75 south; the drive is roughly 3-4 hours. Buses run from Tirana’s South Bus Terminal to Gjirokastër daily. The fortress is a short, steep walk from the town’s main bazaar and the UNESCO-inscribed old town.

• Climb the fortress' ramparts at late afternoon - the pale stone glows and the valley below cools; morning light is flattened by the eastern exposure.
• Bring a camera with a long lens: the fortress hosts an unusual display of Ottoman-era cannons and a tiny, sunburnt petrol pump relic that most visitors miss.
• Allow time to explore the museum of armaments inside; its cramped cases are full of improbably well-preserved rifles and battlefield ephemera.
