How to Get to Korçë#

Korçë is easiest reached by road from Tirana International Airport (TIA) or by regional bus services from other Albanian cities. There is no passenger rail service to the city, so buses, minibuses (furgon) and private transfers are the usual options.

By Air

Tirana International Nënë Tereza (TIA): The main international gateway for Korçë is Tirana International Airport, about 160-180 km northwest by road. From TIA you can take the airport shuttle or a taxi into Tirana city centre (shuttle ~200-400 ALL / €2-3, 20-30 min; taxi ~1,500-2,500 ALL / €12-20, 20-30 min), then an intercity bus or minibus to Korçë (see bus details below) - total travel time door-to-door is typically 3-4 hours by road. Pre-booked private transfers direct from TIA to Korçë are available and cost roughly €80-120 depending on vehicle and number of passengers, with a drive time around 3-3.5 hours.

Ioannina National Airport (IOA), Greece: Ioannina is the nearest regional airport across the border in Greece; scheduled services are limited and seasonal. Public connections to Korçë are infrequent: some travelers take a taxi or pre-booked transfer from Ioannina to the Kapshtica border and onward to Korçë - expect roughly €50-100 for a private transfer and around 1.5-2.5 hours travel time depending on border processing. If using IOA, check schedules carefully and allow extra time for the border crossing.

By Train & Bus

Train: There is currently no regular passenger rail service to Korçë. Albania’s active passenger rail network is very limited and does not serve the city, so travel by train is not a practical option for reaching Korçë.

Bus / Minibuses (Furgon): Korçë is well served by intercity buses and shared minibuses. Intercity buses run between Tirana Bus Station and Korçë Bus Station (Stacioni i Autobusëve Korçë) several times daily; fares are typically ~700-1,000 ALL (€6-9) and the journey takes about 3-3.5 hours. Faster or more flexible shared minibuses (furgon) also run from Tirana and the airport area; expect similar fares (≈600-900 ALL / €5-8) and variable departure times. Local routes connect Korçë with nearby towns (Pogradec, Bilisht, Ersekë) with short trips usually under 300 ALL (€2-3).

How to Get Around Korçë#

Korçë is a compact city best explored on foot for the centre, while regional travel relies on buses, minibuses and car hire. For convenience and flexibility when visiting surrounding villages or remote sites, a rental car or private transfer works best; for budget travel, use intercity buses or furgons.

  • Intercity buses (700-1,000 ALL) - Intercity buses are the most reliable and economical way to get to Korçë from Tirana and other Albanian cities. Buses depart from Tirana’s main bus station and arrive at Korçë Bus Station; travel time from Tirana is about 3-3.5 hours. Book in advance during high season if you need a specific departure, but many lines sell tickets on the day at the terminal.
  • Shared minibuses (Furgon) (600-900 ALL) - Furgons run frequently between Tirana (and the airport area) and Korçë and can be quicker or more frequent than scheduled buses. They are flexible and popular with locals; expect variable departure times and slightly crowded conditions. Good for solo travelers on a budget who don’t mind basic comfort.
  • Taxis & Private transfers (300 ALL (short city) / €80-120 (airport → Korçë)) - Taxis are useful for door-to-door trips, airport transfers, or reaching places not well served by buses. Short city rides cost a few hundred ALL; a private transfer from Tirana Airport to Korçë is commonly €80-120 depending on vehicle size. Agree a price or use a reputable company before starting the trip.
  • Car hire (€25-60 per day) - Hiring a car is the best way to explore the Korçë region and nearby attractions at your own pace - roads are generally in good condition between major towns but can be narrower in rural areas. Rental rates vary by season; watch for one-way fees if you don’t return to the pick-up city and carry ID and insurance documentation.
  • Bicycle (€5-15 per day) - Korçë’s compact centre and nearby countryside are pleasant to cycle, especially in good weather. Rentals are limited compared with larger Albanian cities, so check with guesthouses or local shops; many streets in the historic centre are cobbled, so a sturdy bike is preferable. Cycling is a relaxed way to reach nearby villages and lakes.
  • Walking - The city centre is compact and best explored on foot - the pedestrian boulevard (Rruga Barrikadave) and the Old Bazaar area are easily covered in a few hours. Walking is the most enjoyable way to take in Korçë’s cafes, museums and churches and discover side streets and local life.
