How to Get to Përmet#

Përmet is reached mainly by road: buses/minibuses from Tirana or regional hubs, and occasional cross‑border links from nearby Greek airports. There is no rail service to the town, so plan on bus or car transfers.

By Air

Tirana Nënë Tereza International Airport (TIA): Tirana is the main international airport for Albania. From TIA you can travel to Përmet by bus or private transfer: coach routes to southern Albania (via Tepelenë) take roughly 3.5-5 hours depending on connections; fares are approximately 1,500-2,500 ALL (≈€12-20). Private transfers and taxis are faster but considerably more expensive.

Ioannina National Airport (IOA), Greece: Ioannina is the closest Greek airport geographically and has seasonal flights; it can be a convenient entry if cross-border travel is possible. From Ioannina to Përmet expect a road journey of about 1.5-2.5 hours (border formalities may add time); public cross-border services are limited-check schedules and border rules in advance.

By Train & Bus

Train: Albania’s rail network does not serve Përmet; there are no direct passenger train services to the town.

Bus: Road connections are the main option. Buses and minibuses (furgons) run from Tirana, Gjirokastër and Tepelenë toward Përmet - travel times vary by route and road condition (3.5-5 hours from Tirana). Local minibuses between nearby towns and villages are common and are usually the most frequent, low-cost option.

How to Get Around Përmet#

Expect to travel to Përmet by bus/minibus or private car - public services are functional but less frequent than in cities. Renting a car offers flexibility for side trips; local minibuses are the lowest-cost option.

  • Intercity buses (coaches) (≈1,500-2,500 ALL (≈€12-20)) - Long-distance coaches run between Tirana and southern towns; services to Përmet are less frequent than to larger cities - buy tickets at the bus station and allow extra time for transfers. Roads are winding, so journeys can be slower than map distance suggests.
  • Minibuses (furgons) (≈200-1,500 ALL (local to intercity)) - Shared minibuses are the backbone of regional travel in southern Albania - they leave when full and connect small towns, often faster or more direct than scheduled coaches. They are cheap but can be cramped and lack luggage space; fares vary by route.
  • Taxis & private transfers (Varies widely (ask locally)) - Taxis and private cars are the most reliable door-to-door option, useful for early/late arrivals or if public schedules don’t fit. Expect significantly higher costs than shared transport; confirm the fare in advance.
  • Car hire (€30-70/day (approx.)) - Hiring a car is recommended if you want freedom to explore the surrounding mountains and thermal springs. Roads are generally passable but can be narrow and steep; a small car with good clearance is useful in rural areas.
  • Local buses & dolmuş-style services (Low (small fares)) - Local services connect Përmet with nearby villages and attractions (hot springs, canyons). Timetables are informal - ask at the bus station or your accommodation for current departures.
  • Walking - Përmet’s centre is small and best explored on foot; walking is also the way to access nearby trails and riverside sites.

Traditional food products are the best local buys. There’s no large shopping district; most purchases are from independent shops or markets and from guesthouses selling regional specialties.

Nightlife in Përmet#

Nightlife in Përmet is modest and low-key: a handful of cafés, tavernas and guesthouses host evening chats and occasional live music. The atmosphere is community-oriented rather than tourist clubbing. Expect the liveliest evenings during local events or festivals; otherwise the town quiets down relatively early compared with larger Albanian cities.
