How to Get to Pogradec#

Pogradec on Lake Ohrid is best reached by road from Tirana or by crossing over from Ohrid (North Macedonia). There are no practical train links; regular buses and shared minibuses provide the most reliable connections.

By Air

Tirana-Mother Teresa Airport (TIA): Tirana is the main international gateway for Pogradec. From Tirana take an intercity bus toward Korçë or Pogradec - the trip is around 3.5-4.5 hours and fares generally fall in the €8-15 range.

Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle Airport (OHD): Ohrid (North Macedonia) is geographically close to Pogradec across the lake; seasonal or limited flights arrive in Ohrid, and a short cross-border road transfer (taxi or bus) to Pogradec takes around 45-90 minutes depending on border crossing and routing, with fares around €10-20.

By Train & Bus

Train: Albania’s current passenger rail network does not provide convenient train access to Pogradec - overland travel is dominated by buses.

Bus: Pogradec has a local bus station with regular services to Tirana, Korçë and cross-border connections to Ohrid. Bus trips to Tirana are about 3.5-4.5 hours (fares ~€8-15); local routes around the lake and to nearby towns are inexpensive (a few euros).

How to Get Around Pogradec#

Expect to travel to Pogradec by bus from Tirana or by short cross-border transfers from Ohrid; once there, walking and local minibuses cover sightseeing and short journeys.

  • Intercity bus (€8-15) - Direct buses link Pogradec with Tirana and Korçë; trips to the capital take roughly 3.5-4.5 hours. Buses are frequent enough for flexible travel and are the standard public transport option for visitors.
  • Cross-border bus / taxi (€10-20) - Short cross-border trips from Ohrid/Struga are common - use scheduled minibuses or taxis. Border controls add time, so allow flexibility. Expect fares around €10-20 depending on vehicle and season.
  • Private transfer / taxi (€40-€90 (from Tirana)) - Private transfers are practical if you have luggage or arrive late; they’re faster but more expensive than scheduled buses. Agree price in advance or use a reputable operator.
  • Car rental - Renting a car is useful for exploring the Lake Ohrid area and nearby archaeological sites. Roads around the lake are generally passable; park carefully in town centres.
  • Local buses / minibuses (€0.5-3) - Local minibuses serve villages around the lake and short regional hops - cheap and frequent but can be crowded. They’re the best budget option for short local trips.
  • Walking - Pogradec’s lakeside promenade and compact centre are very walkable; strolling the shore is one of the town’s main attractions and often the easiest way to move between sights.
