Larsøya
Island Remote island in southern Indian Ocean
How to Get to Larsøya #
Larsøya can only be reached as part of a sea expedition to Bouvetøya. Expeditions typically depart from southern African ports or are mounted from research vessels crossing the South Atlantic; landings are infrequent, weather-dependent and require permits from Norwegian authorities overseeing Bouvetøya as a nature reserve.
Tips for Visiting Larsøya #
- Larsøya is part of the Bouvetøya nature reserve; all landings are tightly controlled - secure permission from Norwegian authorities well in advance.
- Plan for a ship-based visit only during the austral summer (November-March); conditions outside that window are usually impossible for landing.
- Bring seabird-friendly binoculars and expect to view the islet from a zodiac or ship deck - landings, if allowed, are brief and on sharp, barnacled rock.
