Lake Vostok

Lake Large Antarctic subglacial lake beneath East Antarctic ice

Beneath East Antarctica’s ice lies Lake Vostok, a subglacial freshwater lake accessed only by scientific drilling; it draws international research teams rather than tourists.

Main image

Lake Vostok is a large subglacial freshwater lake located beneath the East Antarctic Ice Sheet beneath Russia’s Vostok research station. It is one of the world’s largest known subglacial lakes and has been isolated from the atmosphere for millions of years.

There is no conventional visitor access; the site is of scientific rather than touristic interest, studied for subglacial microbial life, climate records and ice dynamics. Studies use remote sensing, ice cores and controlled drilling from research stations rather than on-site tourism.

Lake Vostok was identified through geophysical surveys and ice-penetrating radar in the latter 20th century and subsequently became the focus of multidisciplinary Antarctic research. Drilling operations and international scientific programmes have sought to sample the lake or its overlying ice without contaminating the environment.

Situated beneath the East Antarctic Ice Sheet near Russia’s Vostok Station in inland Antarctica, the lake lies beneath several kilometres of ice in a very remote polar interior location.

  • Isolation & research interest: The lake lies beneath roughly 4 kilometres of Antarctic ice and is isolated from the surface environment, making it of high interest to researchers studying extreme ecosystems and paleoclimate.

How to Get to Lake Vostok #

Lake Vostok lies beneath Antarctica’s East Antarctic Ice Sheet and is not accessible to tourists. Access is only via organised scientific expeditions and polar research logistics (not commercial transport) - e.g., operations run through national Antarctic programs and require long-range aircraft and/or over-ice traverses to research stations (such as Russian Antarctic logistics to Vostok Station).

Tips for Visiting Lake Vostok #

  • Lake Vostok lies buried beneath about four kilometres of Antarctic ice and is not accessible to tourists-only highly specialized scientific drilling programs have reached it under strict Antarctic Treaty protocols.
  • Access requires national program approval, heavy‑duty logistics and stringent anti‑contamination procedures; if research access is essential, plan through an accredited polar research organization rather than expecting a conventional visit.

Best Time to Visit Lake Vostok #

Lake Vostok is not a tourist destination - access is limited to scientific expeditions and, when it occurs, is generally during the austral summer when conditions are least severe.

Austral summer (field access)
November-February · well below 0°C year‑round (least severe conditions in summer)
If access is possible at all, it occurs during the austral summer when conditions are relatively less severe - travel is limited to research expeditions with specialized logistics.
Austral winter
March-October · well below 0°C year‑round (extremely harsh)
Inaccessible to most visitors; extreme cold, darkness and sea/ice conditions make travel effectively impossible except for specialized scientific missions.
