Kratie is a rather large province in eastern Cambodia, extending as far as the Vietnam border, though the Mekong River passes through the center of the province and the majority of Kratie’s residents live along this major waterway.

The provincial capital city, also called Kratie (or more phonetically: Kracheh), is a relatively sleepy riverside town with some colonial architecture and a lively market. Kratie town features a number of nearby attractions, the most notable of which are the Irrawaddy dolphins that can be seen in the waters just north of town. Other attractions around the town, many of which can be explored with the ecotourism project Mekong Discovery Trail, include temples, river islands, exotic birds, and fishing communities.

Other attractions in the province include historic Sambor town, where the 100 pillar pagoda is located.

The province is accessed by bus and taxis from anywhere in Cambodia, though most easily from Phnom Penh, Kampong Cham, or Stung Treng. Although there are boats servicing the Mekong river these are not commonly used public ferries.

Travelers heading to Mondulkiri will have the pleasure of passing through the forgettable town of Snoul, though wildlife enthusiasts who are able to arrange a visit may be interested in the Snoul Wildlife Sanctuary. Typically, however, Kratie is a stopping point on the way to Ratanakiri Province, farther north and east.
