How to Get to Kilinochchi#

Kilinochchi in Sri Lanka’s Northern Province is normally reached via Jaffna (by air or rail) or by overland travel from Colombo using the northern rail and bus corridors. Local buses and taxis from Jaffna provide the final leg to Kilinochchi.

By Air

Jaffna / Palaly (Jaffna International, JAF): For Kilinochchi the closest airport on the Jaffna Peninsula is Jaffna International (JAF/Palaly), which handles limited domestic and regional flights. From Jaffna airport reach Kilinochchi by road (taxi or bus) in roughly 1-1.5 hours depending on traffic.

Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB): The main gateway to Sri Lanka is Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) near Colombo. From CMB you can travel to Kilinochchi by a domestic flight to Jaffna or by a combination of long-distance bus/train to Jaffna and then local transport - expect a full-day overland transfer (6-8+ hours) by train/bus/car depending on routing.

By Train & Bus

Train: There is rail service to Jaffna (Jaffna Railway Station) on the Northern Line; from Jaffna, Kilinochchi is reachable by bus or taxi. Trains from Colombo to Jaffna take many hours (overnight/day services) and must be checked for current schedules and service levels.

Bus / Van (Northern Province services): Regular long-distance buses and public buses connect Jaffna, Kilinochchi and other towns in the Northern Province. Buses from Jaffna to Kilinochchi typically take about 1-1.5 hours; fares are very low (LKR single-digit to low double-digit amounts) and buses are the most frequent local option.

How to Get Around Kilinochchi#

Kilinochchi is best reached via Jaffna by rail or air for the final leg, then by local bus or taxi. For regional travel buses and local minibuses are the most common and cheapest options; trains serve longer-distance links to the peninsula.

  • Train (Sri Lanka Railways) (LKR (low to moderate)) - Sri Lanka Railways runs services on the Northern Line to Jaffna; journeys from Colombo can be long but offer a reliable route to the peninsula. From Jaffna station you continue to Kilinochchi by bus or taxi. Check current timetables as services have been progressively restored and improved in recent years.
