How to Get to Nuwara Eliya#

Nuwara Eliya (often reached via Nanu Oya rail station) is best accessed by the scenic train from Colombo or by road from Colombo/Kandy. Trains are slower but very scenic; private transfers are faster and more convenient with luggage.

By Air

Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB): The most common international arrival. Train from Colombo to Nanu Oya (near Nuwara Eliya) is an iconic route but is long: Colombo Fort → Nanu Oya takes about 6-8 hours by train; expect 2nd/3rd class fares from about LKR 100-500 and reserved 2nd/1st class fares higher.

Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (HRI): Located much farther south-east; road transfer to Nuwara Eliya would take 5-7+ hours and is not commonly used by visitors heading to the hill country.

By Train & Bus

Train: The Colombo-Nuwara Eliya route goes to Nanu Oya station (serves Nuwara Eliya). Trains are scenic and popular - departure classes range from general to 1st class observation cars; reserved 2nd/1st class tickets can be booked in advance where available and prices vary by class (typically LKR 200-1500+).

Bus / Coach: Buses run from Colombo, Kandy and other towns to Nuwara Eliya. Buses are cheaper but slower than private transfers: expect LKR 150-700 depending on origin. Tuk‑tuks handle local trips within town and to nearby tea estates.
