How to Get to Galle#

Galle is reached most easily from Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) near Colombo or, less commonly, Mattala (HRI) in the south. Trains from Colombo Fort and express buses on the Southern Expressway are the usual ways into Galle; taxis and private transfers are quicker but more expensive.

By Air

Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB): The main international gateway for southern Sri Lanka is Bandaranaike, north of Colombo. From CMB you can take a prebooked private taxi or airport transfer to Galle via the Southern Expressway (E01); travel time is typically around 2.5-3.5 hours and fares for a private taxi range about LKR 9,000-14,000 (≈ USD 45-70). Alternatively, take the airport shuttle/SLTB bus to Colombo Fort (about 1-1.5 hours, ~LKR 120-250) and transfer there to a train or express bus to Galle.

Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (HRI): Mattala is a smaller international airport in the south and is considerably closer to Galle than CMB. Regular public transport is limited - most travellers use taxis or prebooked transfers: taxis take about 1.5-2.5 hours to Galle and typically cost LKR 4,500-8,000 (≈ USD 22-40). There are occasional shuttle services and private operators during peak seasons; check schedules in advance.

By Train & Bus

Train: Sri Lanka Railways runs frequent services between Colombo Fort and Galle (terminus: Galle Railway Station) along the coastal line. Journey times are typically 2-3 hours depending on the service (express/intercity trains are faster). Fares vary by class: expect roughly LKR 80-600 depending on 3rd/2nd/1st or reserved seats; book reserved seats for peak travel.

Bus: Long-distance SLTB and private express buses run from Colombo (Pettah / Central Bus Stand) to Galle and use the Southern Expressway for faster trips. Travel time by express bus is usually 2-3 hours; fares typically range LKR 150-400 for standard and up to LKR 400-700 for air-conditioned/express services. Local buses also run along the coast and connect Galle with nearby towns (cheaper but slower).

How to Get Around Galle#

Galle is easiest to navigate by a mix of train/bus for intercity travel and tuk-tuk or walking for short trips inside the fort and nearby beaches. For comfort and schedule certainty choose trains or express buses; for short hops and sightseeing, tuk-tuks and walking work best.

  • Train (Sri Lanka Railways) (LKR 80-600) - The coastal rail line to Galle is one of the most scenic and reliable ways to travel from Colombo. Trains depart Colombo Fort and stop at several coastal towns before terminating at Galle Railway Station inside the fort area. Book reserved seats for intercity/first-class services during holidays; expect seating classes from 3rd to 1st class and carriage crowding on popular services.
  • Long-distance Bus (LKR 150-700) - SLTB and private express buses run frequently between Colombo and Galle, many using the Southern Expressway for faster journeys. Buses drop you at the central Galle bus stand near the fort; air-conditioned express services cost more but save time. Local non-express buses are cheaper but slower and can be crowded.
  • Taxi / Private Transfer (LKR 1,000-14,000) - Taxis and prebooked private transfers are the most comfortable way to get to and from the airport or travel door-to-door around the region. Expect higher fares than public transport but reliable timings and luggage handling - ideal for groups or if you’re on a tight schedule. Agree a price or use a reputable operator; negotiate or confirm the meter for local taxis.
  • Ride-hail (PickMe & local taxis) (LKR 200-3,000) - PickMe operates in much of Sri Lanka, including Galle, and is useful for short trips, airport runs, or when tuk-tuk drivers aren’t available. Fares are metered or shown in-app and are generally higher than shared buses but cheaper than private transfers. Availability can dip late at night or in very remote spots, so plan ahead.
  • Tuk-tuk (Three-wheeler) (LKR 100-1,200) - Tuk-tuks are the most flexible way to hop around Galle, the fort, and nearby beaches; short fares are low and drivers know the best shortcuts. Always agree a price before starting your journey (or insist on the meter) - expect small inner-fort trips to be very cheap while longer runs to beaches like Unawatuna cost more. They’re fast for short trips but not ideal with lots of luggage.
  • Rental Car / Motorbike (LKR 1,200-8,000 per day) - Renting a car or motorbike gives you the freedom to explore the Southern Coast at your own pace and reach quieter beaches and inland sites. Drivers in Sri Lanka can be assertive; hire from reputable agencies, check insurance, and bring an international driving permit if required. Motorbike rentals are economical but be cautious on busy roads and in rainy weather.
  • Walking - Galle Fort and the town centre are compact and best experienced on foot - narrow streets, shops, cafés and the ramparts are all easily explored by walking. Walking is the easiest way to soak up the fort’s history and stop spontaneously at viewpoints and eateries.
