How to Get to Puttalam#

Puttalam is reachable by both rail (Puttalam Line) and frequent bus services from Colombo and coastal towns. For most visitors rail or an express bus from Colombo offers a straightforward trip.

By Air

Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB): Colombo’s international airport is the main arrival point for visitors to Puttalam. From Colombo you can travel by train or bus to Puttalam; travel time by road is typically a few hours depending on traffic.

Mattala/Colombo Airport (HRI): Mattala has limited services and is farther south; it is generally not the practical choice for reaching Puttalam compared with Colombo (CMB).

By Train & Bus

Train: Puttalam is served by the Puttalam Line of Sri Lanka Railways, with trains running to Colombo Fort via Ragama and Chilaw. Journey times vary with service type; ticket classes and comfort levels differ.

Bus: Regular buses link Puttalam with Colombo, Negombo and other towns. Buses are frequent and economical; express services are faster and more comfortable than ordinary route buses.

How to Get Around Puttalam#

Use the Puttalam Line train or regular bus services for reliable travel from Colombo and nearby towns. Within Puttalam, tuk-tuks and walking are the main ways to get around.

  • Sri Lanka Railways (Puttalam Line) (Low (a few hundred LKR)) - Trains run between Puttalam and Colombo Fort, stopping at key towns such as Chilaw and Ragama. Train travel is economical and scenic close to the coast; book ahead for reserved seating on long journeys if available.
  • Intercity / local bus (Low (a few hundred LKR)) - Buses connect Puttalam with Colombo, Negombo and surrounding areas. They are frequent and cheap; choose air-conditioned or express services for greater comfort on longer trips.
  • Tuk-tuk (50-300 LKR) - Tuk-tuks are the main local transport in town for short trips. Negotiate fares before starting or insist on using a meter where available.
  • Private car / taxi (2,000 LKR+/day) - Hiring a taxi or private car is useful for day trips to lagoon areas and nearby attractions. Be clear about prices and whether tolls or fuel are included.
