How to Get to Sigiriya#
Sigiriya is reached most easily by road from Bandaranaike Airport (CMB) or Colombo/Kandy. Public buses are cheap but slower; private transfers and shared shuttles are the most practical for direct door‑to‑door travel to the rock and nearby hotels.
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB): Sri Lanka’s main international gateway, about 90-120 minutes by car to Sigiriya/Dambulla. Private transfers and hotel shuttles take roughly 2.5-3.5 hours depending on traffic; expect private transfers from about USD 60-120. Public buses require a combination of services from Colombo or Negombo.
Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (HRI): A secondary international airport in southern Sri Lanka; it is much farther from Sigiriya (5-6+ hours by road) and rarely used for direct transfers to central hill country - not a practical option for most visitors to Sigiriya.
Train: The nearest useful rail access for Sigiriya is via Habarana/Dambulla area by connecting services; there is no direct tourist train to Sigiriya. Trains serve nearby cities (e.g., Habarana via regional services) but you will usually combine train with bus/taxi.
Bus / Coach: Regular public buses and private coaches run from Colombo and Kandy to Dambulla/Habarana; the final leg to Sigiriya is normally by local bus, tuk‑tuk or taxi (Dambulla to Sigiriya ~20-30 minutes, local bus fares LKR 20-100, tuk‑tuk LKR 200-800 depending on distance and negotiation).
