Kep developed as a seaside resort during the French colonial period and experienced growth in the mid 20th century; many colonial-era villas and structures remain in the surrounding hills and town. The beach has been used by locals and visitors since that period.

How to Get to Kep Beach #
Kep Beach is the main shoreline in Kep town and sits on the town’s waterfront a short walk from the centre and pier (minutes on foot). Kep is served by daily minibuses and coaches from Phnom Penh and from nearby Kampot; by road it is commonly reached from Phnom Penh in about 3-4 hours (roughly 150 km) by inter‑city coach or private car. Once in Kep town the beach and the carpark/jetty area are within easy walking distance.
Tips for Visiting Kep Beach #
- Aim for late afternoon for Kep Beach to enjoy the sunset and then walk a short distance to the crab-market restaurants that open for evening seafood service; the beach itself is small and heats up midday.
- Access the beach from Kep town so you can combine a short visit with the nearby crab market pier and the boat departures to Rabbit Island (Koh Tonsay); the national-park trailhead behind town is the best way up into viewpoints.
- Don't skip Kep National Park's short ridge trails behind the town-those paths offer quiet panoramic views over the coast that many beach-goers miss and are only a 10-20 minute walk from the main seaside area.
