Kep Beach is a small coastal beach area near the town of Kep in southern Cambodia, known for its shallow sandy shore and views of nearby islands. The area has a history as a coastal resort and is a modest local recreational destination.

Beachgoers come for sunset views, coastal walking, and access to nearby seafood restaurants and the small island boat trips off the coast. The shoreline provides informal swimming and easy access to the town’s seaside eateries.

Kep developed as a seaside resort during the French colonial period and experienced growth in the mid 20th century; many colonial-era villas and structures remain in the surrounding hills and town. The beach has been used by locals and visitors since that period.

The beach is located on Cambodia’s southern Gulf coastline near the town of Kep, with the town and nearby national park providing access and services for visitors.

Exploring Kep Beach

The sand at Kep Beach is grey and the water shallow and dark green, but that does little to deter local visitors, who wade in with most of their clothes on. At weekends the beach fills with residents who come in groups to eat and drink at the hammock-shack restaurants along the shore and cool off in the sea.

It is not Hawaii, and not nearly as pretty as the beaches of Sihanoukville, but it is thoroughly laid-back. Cycle along the coast, alternating between swims and cheap, fresh crab eaten from a hammock somewhere peaceful, or alongside the rowdy but friendly locals enjoying their day off.

How to Get to Kep Beach

Kep Beach is the main shoreline in Kep town and sits on the town’s waterfront a short walk from the centre and pier (minutes on foot). Kep is served by daily minibuses and coaches from Phnom Penh and from nearby Kampot; by road it is commonly reached from Phnom Penh in about 3-4 hours (roughly 150 km) by inter‑city coach or private car. Once in Kep town the beach and the carpark/jetty area are within easy walking distance.

Tips for Visiting Kep Beach

  • Aim for late afternoon for Kep Beach to enjoy the sunset and then walk a short distance to the crab-market restaurants that open for evening seafood service; the beach itself is small and heats up midday.
  • Access the beach from Kep town so you can combine a short visit with the nearby crab market pier and the boat departures to Rabbit Island (Koh Tonsay); the national-park trailhead behind town is the best way up into viewpoints.
  • Don't skip Kep National Park's short ridge trails behind the town-those paths offer quiet panoramic views over the coast that many beach-goers miss and are only a 10-20 minute walk from the main seaside area.
