Exploring Kep's Durian Plantations and Cashew Farms#
Durian is one of Asia’s most beloved fruits, notorious for a pungent smell and peculiar taste that divides visitors. The plantations here also shelter what locals call the “holy tree.”
Just north of Kao Krosang Village lie the cashew farms, where you can learn how cashews are harvested and how the fruit finds its way into Cambodian cooking. Together they make an easy, offbeat detour into the rural hills behind Kep’s better-known coastline and crab market.
Kep Durian & Cashew Farms: Getting There & Need to Know#
- What it is: Durian plantations and cashew farms in the hills east of Kep.
- Where: On the east side of Kep National Park, up the roads opposite Wat Kao Krosang. The cashew-farm turnoff is just north of the temple; the durian-farm turnoff is just south of it, beside a local school.
- Nearest town: Eastern Kep, along the north - south road from the coast to National Road 33. Kep is about 3 hours south of Phnom Penh, the nearest international airport.
- When to go: Early dry/cool season, especially November to January.
- Hours & fees: Daylight hours; no entrance fee.
