Iran in October: Weather, Crowds & What to Expect

Northwest (East & West Azerbaijan, Ardabil, Tabriz)

October’s air is crisp and dry and the region shifts to autumn colors earlier than central Iran; vineyards and orchards are busy with harvest in villages near Lake Urmia. Mountain winds pick up more frequently and some guesthouses begin closing for the coming cold; road conditions are generally good but check altitudinal passes. For photographers, low-angle light and clear skies give excellent visibility to Sabalan and the ridgelines.

Caspian Coast & Alborz Foothills (Gilan, Mazandaran, Rasht, Chalus)

October’s air is crisp with fewer rainy days, and autumn colors show in the Alborz foothills - this is one of the best months for visiting the Caspian coast before the winter rains return. Fishermen’s seasonal catches change and local food markets brim with autumn produce. Pack a rain jacket for occasional fronts but expect overall pleasant touring weather and quieter beaches.

Alborz Mountains, Tehran & the Central Plateau (Tehran, Mount Damavand, Dizin, Kashan)

October turns pleasantly cool and dry across the plateau with great conditions for architecture tours in Isfahan, historic caravanserais near Kashan and walking in Tehran’s museums. Early autumn colors appear in higher parks, and the air is generally clear - excellent for photography. Pack layers for cool mornings and warmer afternoons; this month is a tourism sweet spot before winter sets in.

Zagros Mountains & Western Highlands (Kurdistan, Kermanshah, Lorestan, Hamedan)

October is crisp and increasingly cool, with colourful slopes and clearer air - a fine month for both cultural visits in Hamedan and outdoor activities in lower valleys. Many mountain guesthouses begin to close in preparation for winter, so book ahead if you plan to stay in smaller towns. Bring a warm jacket for evenings and be alert to earlier nightfall when scheduling day trips.

Central Plateau Deserts & Historic Cities (Isfahan, Yazd, Kashan, Kerman, the Dasht-e Kavir and Lut margins)

October is an excellent month for touring: dry, warm days and cool nights make for pleasant exploration of Yazd’s mudbrick city, Isfahan’s squares and the caravanserais around Kashan. Visibility is typically excellent, ideal for landscape photography, and hiking in higher desert margins is comfortable. Bring a mix of thin daytime layers and warmer evening clothes, and book accommodations early for the popular shoulder season.

Persian Gulf & Gulf of Oman Coast (Bandar Abbas, Qeshm, Kish, Hormuz, Bushehr)

October is comfortable with warm days and cooling nights, making it a popular shoulder season to explore mangroves at Qeshm, the colorful cliffs of Hormuz and the beaches of Kish. Maritime conditions are stable and many operators resume full schedules. Light layers for evenings and sun protection for daytime are sufficient; book accommodation in advance on holiday weekends.

Southeast & Sistan-Baluchestan (Zahedan, Chabahar, Zabol)

October is a pleasant month across the southeast: milder temperatures and calmer winds make Sistan and Baluchestan accessible for cultural visits and market exploration. The sea at Chabahar is warm enough for swimming, and overland routes are generally open. Bring sun protection during the day and a light jacket for nights, especially in higher-elevation areas around Zahedan.
