Northwest (East & West Azerbaijan, Ardabil, Tabriz)
August stays warm and often dry across the region, with the highest relief areas providing refuge from the plains’ heat - Sabalan’s alpine slopes are still the coolest option for day treks. Fruit markets brim with cherries and apples, and small village festivals occasionally coincide with harvests. Nights are comfortable; bring light sleeping layers and be aware that mountain streams offer excellent cooling but can swell after summer storms.
Caspian Coast & Alborz Foothills (Gilan, Mazandaran, Rasht, Chalus)
August is the region’s muggy peak: frequent afternoon thunderstorms and elevated humidity create a feeling of sultriness, and beaches are crowded with domestic holidaymakers. Fishing ports like Bandar-e Anzali see bustle, and ferry services can be delayed by storms - check schedules. Mosquitoes are at their worst; pack repellents, lightweight long sleeves for evenings and be prepared for sudden rain.
Alborz Mountains, Tehran & the Central Plateau (Tehran, Mount Damavand, Dizin, Kashan)
August continues intense summer heat across the central plateau, with Isfahan and Kashan feeling stifling by midday and early afternoon; nights are warmer than in spring. Drier air means little rain, but heat can make walking between monuments taxing. For photographers and walkers, pre-dawn and sunset are the best times to be outdoors; ensure accommodation has adequate cooling and avoid overexposure to the sun.
Zagros Mountains & Western Highlands (Kurdistan, Kermanshah, Lorestan, Hamedan)
August remains warm and is generally dry, with evenings giving comfortable relief from daytime heat at higher elevations. Livestock movements and local agricultural activity continue, and rural lanes are active with harvest work. For visitors, this is a quieter tourist period away from major sites; bring cooling layers for day and warmer clothes for mountain nights and plan water resupply on longer routes.
Central Plateau Deserts & Historic Cities (Isfahan, Yazd, Kashan, Kerman, the Dasht-e Kavir and Lut margins)
August remains very hot, with gradual marginal relief at night; this is low season for many historic towns due to the intensity of sun. Some caravanserais and smaller guesthouses close for the hottest weeks, while those remaining open often offer discounts. Pack extreme sun protection, drink frequently and plan activities for the coolest hours; severe heat should be taken seriously and strenuous outdoor work avoided.
Persian Gulf & Gulf of Oman Coast (Bandar Abbas, Qeshm, Kish, Hormuz, Bushehr)
August continues with very high humidity and heat; sea breezes provide marginal comfort but afternoons are oppressive and many locals avoid outdoor work during midday. Dive and snorkeling conditions remain good early in the day, while evenings host the liveliest social life with night markets and seaside promenades. Ensure hotels have reliable cooling and schedule water-based activities for dawn and dusk.
Southeast & Sistan-Baluchestan (Zahedan, Chabahar, Zabol)
August keeps the strong winds and hot, dry conditions inland through the plateau areas, with coastal locales again the most hospitable for tourists. Local fishing and port activity persist in Chabahar, though humidity can be higher near the shore. For all travel in this region, plan conservative itineraries, carry protective coverings for dust, and expect services in remote areas to be basic.
