Northwest (East & West Azerbaijan, Ardabil, Tabriz)

By April the highlands around Mount Sabalan are carpeted in alpine flowers and the shuttered winter villages reopen; temperatures rise quickly by midday. Tabriz and the valleys are pleasantly mild, making this a good month for visiting the UNESCO bazaar or doing day hikes if roads are clear. Spring rains can still trigger muddy tracks in rural Kurd areas; a light rain jacket and flexible itinerary are smart.

Caspian Coast & Alborz Foothills (Gilan, Mazandaran, Rasht, Chalus)

April explodes with vegetation: rice paddies near Rasht are flooded for planting, and the humid warmth brings mosquitoes in lowlands - plan repellents and lightweight long sleeves for evenings. The Alborz foothills become vividly green and accessible for lower-elevation hikes, though some higher trails remain wet and slippery. It’s a popular month for domestic travelers seeking cooler air, so coastal guesthouses can fill on weekends.

Alborz Mountains, Tehran & the Central Plateau (Tehran, Mount Damavand, Dizin, Kashan)

April brings pleasant, warm days on the plateau and blooming gardens in Kashan and Isfahan’s outskirts; it’s a peak period for cultural tourism before the summer heat arrives. Mountain slopes still have patches of snow higher up, making the contrast between green plains and white peaks striking. Expect crowded heritage sites and lively bazaars; lightweight layers, sun protection and a hat are essential for full-day touring.

Zagros Mountains & Western Highlands (Kurdistan, Kermanshah, Lorestan, Hamedan)

April is one of the region’s best months: green hills, flowing streams and moderate temperatures make valley hikes and village visits particularly rewarding. The carpets-of-flowers period in Zagros foothills draws local tourism and pastoral activity increases, showing traditional shepherd life. Pack light rain protection and sturdy boots for trails that can still be slippery after spring runoff; expect lively local markets.

Central Plateau Deserts & Historic Cities (Isfahan, Yazd, Kashan, Kerman, the Dasht-e Kavir and Lut margins)

April is warm and dry across the plateau, making it a superb month to visit Isfahan’s bridges, Yazd’s windcatchers and Kerman’s bazaars. Desert winds are generally moderate but occasional dust can reduce visibility; still, this is a prime window for cultural tourism before full summer heat. Lightweight clothing for daytime, a hat and a warm layer for nights will keep you comfortable.

Persian Gulf & Gulf of Oman Coast (Bandar Abbas, Qeshm, Kish, Hormuz, Bushehr)

April warms significantly and humidity begins to climb; sea excursions remain good but midday heat can be intense on exposed beaches. The geological features of Hormuz and the mangrove channels of Qeshm are still enjoyable in early morning or late afternoon; plan activity times accordingly. Bring breathable clothing, sun protection and be prepared for stronger afternoon sea breezes that may affect small boats.

Southeast & Sistan-Baluchestan (Zahedan, Chabahar, Zabol)

April is a season of increasing wind: Zabol and the Sistan basin often begin to experience strong, dusty gusts that can reduce visibility and make overland travel uncomfortable. Chabahar remains pleasant and fishing communities are active, making the coast the better place to base travel. If visiting the Sistan plains, bring high-quality eye protection, face coverings and expect potential transport delays during dust events.
