Northwest (East & West Azerbaijan, Ardabil, Tabriz)
A bitter snapshot of late winter persists through February: Ardabil’s mountaintops still hold snow and cold mornings dominate Tabriz bazaars. Thermal springs near Sareyn are especially appealing now - locals flock there for warmth, but weekend crowds can swell and small guesthouses may be full. Expect clear, dry air between storms; don a warm coat and be ready for occasional road closures in higher passes.
Caspian Coast & Alborz Foothills (Gilan, Mazandaran, Rasht, Chalus)
February continues the region’s wet season with persistent drizzle, occasional heavy storms and lowland fog that limits sunshine on many days. Ramsar’s seafront can be atmospheric but slick, and mountain roads such as the Chalus Road can be treacherous in landslide-prone spots after storms. Fewer tourists mean easier accommodation, but expect damp clothing and frequent umbrella use - waterproof packs are a must.
Alborz Mountains, Tehran & the Central Plateau (Tehran, Mount Damavand, Dizin, Kashan)
February still feels wintry in Tehran with frequent cold mornings and the high Alborz continuing to hold heavy snowpack; skiing remains good into late winter at Dizin and Tochal. Mount Damavand’s approach routes are snowy and technical, so alpine climbs are only for well-equipped teams. Travelers should book lifts and accommodations in advance for weekend winter sports and bring serious cold-weather gear for high-altitude excursions.
Zagros Mountains & Western Highlands (Kurdistan, Kermanshah, Lorestan, Hamedan)
February remains cold with persistent snow at higher elevations; Hamedan’s plains can be frosty and small alpine lakes freeze, making hiking impractical in many places. This is a season for indoor cultural visits and sampling local cuisine in city bazaars rather than remote trekking. Mountain roads may reopen intermittently between storm systems; bring heavy cold-weather gear for any planned high-elevation excursions.
Central Plateau Deserts & Historic Cities (Isfahan, Yazd, Kashan, Kerman, the Dasht-e Kavir and Lut margins)
February still feels wintry in desert towns: nights remain very cold and daytime heating can be welcome in older buildings. Yazd’s narrow lanes are atmospheric with low pedestrian traffic, and Kerman’s countryside has that off-season hush. Visitors can enjoy quieter museums and carpet bazaars, but warm clothing and awareness of early sunsets are necessary for comfortable exploration.
Persian Gulf & Gulf of Oman Coast (Bandar Abbas, Qeshm, Kish, Hormuz, Bushehr)
February continues the comfortable coastal season with warm, sunny days and cool nights - a prime time for swimming, diving and island exploration around Kish and Qeshm. Migratory birds stop off in coastal lagoons and boat trips are not usually disrupted by weather. Bring sun protection for long beach days and a windbreaker for occasional sea breezes.
Southeast & Sistan-Baluchestan (Zahedan, Chabahar, Zabol)
February remains cool inland with sunlit days and cold nights, while Chabahar’s coastline is pleasantly warm and ideal for seaside walks. The region’s contrast between coastal humidity and inland dryness is evident: beaches are comfortable, but inland towns are dusty and often windy. Bring a sun hat for daylight, warmer clothes for nights and plan limited-range day trips rather than long overland drives.
