Northwest (East & West Azerbaijan, Ardabil, Tabriz)

May usually feels genuinely springlike - warm days in Tabriz and cooler nights in the higher pastures around Sabalan and Aras River. Mountain pastures are alive with shepherd activity and waterfalls in the Zagros foothills swell; it’s an excellent time for road trips before summer heat. Expect fewer tourists than in central Iran and comfortable conditions for trekking, though bring sun protection for exposed ridgelines.

Caspian Coast & Alborz Foothills (Gilan, Mazandaran, Rasht, Chalus)

May is pleasantly warm and humid without the full heat of summer; fishing villages and forest trails near Noor and Chalus are at their most fragrant. Rivers feeding into the Caspian run fuller from spring melt, enhancing small waterfalls - good for photography but make river crossings cautiously. Pack insect repellent, breathable clothing and waterproof shoes for forest paths; midweek travel avoids local weekend crowds.

Alborz Mountains, Tehran & the Central Plateau (Tehran, Mount Damavand, Dizin, Kashan)

May feels hot by plateau standards but usually remains dry: Tehran warms and Isfahan and Kashan become sunny and good for exploring historic sites early in the day. Water features in garden towns are refreshing, but midday heat can make outdoor touring tiring; schedule city walks for mornings and evenings. Pack breathable clothing and carry water - air conditioning in smaller establishments may be limited.

Zagros Mountains & Western Highlands (Kurdistan, Kermanshah, Lorestan, Hamedan)

May warms considerably and mountain meadows are in full bloom - it’s a popular time for picnics and village festivals celebrating spring harvests. Trekking windows widen and passes are generally open, making multi-day hikes viable for fit travelers. Sunscreen and layers for cool nights are useful; mountain streams are now at their strongest so slippery rocks and swollen crossings require care.

Central Plateau Deserts & Historic Cities (Isfahan, Yazd, Kashan, Kerman, the Dasht-e Kavir and Lut margins)

May ushers in rising temperatures and dryer, harsher sun - afternoons in Yazd and Kashan can be hot though evenings remain cool. Hot air shimmering over adobe streets is typical, and desert excursions should be timed early or late to avoid the peak heat. Hydration systems, sun protection and planning for shorter daytime activities are essential; many travelers use dawn desert tours or evening cultural events.

Persian Gulf & Gulf of Oman Coast (Bandar Abbas, Qeshm, Kish, Hormuz, Bushehr)

May is noticeably hotter and more humid: Bandar Abbas streets feel heavy and outdoor activities are best in the early morning or after sunset. Sea temperatures rise, improving snorkeling but also increasing humidity-related discomfort on land; carry water and wear light, loose-fitting clothing. Some travelers shift to night markets and evening boat trips to avoid daytime heat.

Southeast & Sistan-Baluchestan (Zahedan, Chabahar, Zabol)

May typically marks the start of the 120-day winds that blow across the Sistan basin through summer, producing persistent dust and sandstorms that can last days at a time and disrupt flights and road travel. Inland visibility can fall drastically, so many travelers avoid long-distance overland itineraries in this period. Coastal Chabahar and the Makran beachfronts still offer more dependable conditions for outings and sea access.
