Phra Nang Beach
Beach Scenic limestone-fringed beach popular with climbers

Phra Nang Beach is a narrow coastal beach on the Railay peninsula in Krabi province, southern Thailand, known for its white sand and towering limestone cliffs. It is one of the region’s most photographed beaches and a center for rock-climbing activity.
The beach is backed by sheer limestone cliffs used for sport climbing and contains the small Phra Nang (Princess) Cave shrine at the eastern end with visible votive offerings. Sand, shallow clear water and boat landing areas make it a popular sheltered swimming and sunbathing spot accessed by long-tail boat.
Railay and the adjoining beaches developed as a tourist destination in the late 20th century with local boat transport linking the area to Krabi and Ao Nang. The cave shrine at Phra Nang contains longstanding local offerings and has been maintained by fishermen and local communities.
Phra Nang sits on the western side of the Railay peninsula, about 20-30 minutes by boat from Ao Nang and roughly 15-20 km by water from Krabi town depending on route.
- Access: Accessible only by boat from Ao Nang or Krabi; long-tail boat rides take about 10-20 minutes depending on departure point.
- Best times to visit: Early morning and late afternoon offer cooler conditions and better light for photography; mid-day is busiest.
What to See #
- Princess Cave (Tham Phra Nang): A small limestone cave shrine located at the eastern end of the beach with offerings and votive objects that visitors can view from the sand.
- Limestone cliffs and climbing routes: Limestone cliffs and rock faces surrounding the bay that form part of the Railay climbing area and provide anchoring points for sport-climbing routes.
How to Get to Phra Nang Beach #
Phra Nang Beach is on the Railay peninsula (near Ao Nang), Krabi Province, and is accessible only by boat. The usual way is to take a long‑tail boat from Ao Nang Beach (boats run frequently; crossing takes about 10-20 minutes) or from Krabi Town/Wharfs (longer transfer times).
From the Railay boat landing it’s a short walk (roughly 5-10 minutes) across the peninsula to Phra Nang Beach. If driving to Ao Nang or Krabi, Krabi International Airport is the nearest airport (about a 20-40 minute drive to Ao Nang depending on traffic); leave vehicles at Ao Nang and take the boat to Railay.
Tips for Visiting Phra Nang Beach #
- Take the first long-tail boat to Phra Nang at first light to enjoy the beach before the midday day-tripper arrivals - boats operate from Ao Nang/Railay and you can negotiate a morning return time with the boatman.
- Walk to the eastern end of the beach to visit the Princess Cave (Phra Nang Cave) where local offerings are displayed; it's immediately adjacent to the sand and easy to miss if you stay in the center.
- If you want photos with fewer people, time your visit for early morning rather than sunset; sunset draws large numbers of tour groups and can hide the limestone cliffs in silhouette.
