Railay Beach
Beach Scenic limestone-cliff beach popular with rock climbers
Accessible by longtail boat from Ao Nang, Railay’s peninsular beaches sit beneath limestone cliffs favored by climbers; travelers swim, explore sea caves and walk to Phra Nang Beach.
Railay Beach is a small peninsula in Krabi province defined by steep limestone cliffs, white-sand coves and sheltered bays on the Andaman Sea. The area is notable for its dramatic karst scenery and heavy concentration of climbing routes and seaside resorts.
The shoreline is divided into distinct spots - popular West Railay for sunsets and swimming, East Railay for boat landings and mangrove-backed shallows, Phra Nang for its cave shrine and sandspit, and Ton Sai for climbing and backpacker culture. Many beaches are short walks apart and can be traversed on foot at low tide; water taxi transfers are the typical way to arrive.
Railay developed as a tourist and climbing destination in the late 20th century and expanded with small resorts, restaurants and climbing schools. The cliffs attract international climbers while beaches draw day-trippers and overnight visitors seeking sheltered swimming and kayaking.
The peninsula lies on the west coast of southern Thailand within Krabi province and is separated from the mainland by a narrow channel. It is reached by boat from Ao Nang, Krabi Town and nearby islands; the surrounding seascape is dominated by limestone karst towers rising directly from the sea.
- Access: Accessible only by boat due to towering limestone cliffs that cut Railay off from the mainland; long-tail boats run from Ao Nang and Krabi piers.
- Rock climbing: One of Thailand's premier rock-climbing areas with hundreds of bolted routes across multiple cliff faces catering to all ability levels.
What to See #
- West Railay: West Railay - the principal white-sand beach fronting dramatic limestone cliffs and the main entry point for sunset views and boat transfers.
- East Railay: East Railay - a mangrove-backed strip with calm waters at low tide that faces the mainland and contains the bay's main long-tail boat landings.
- Phra Nang Beach / Princess Cave: Phra Nang Beach and Princess Cave - a short sandspit famous for its stalactite cave shrine and clear swimming waters; popular with rock climbers and day-trip visitors.
- Ton Sai: Ton Sai - a rugged cove adjacent to Railay known for climbing boulders, backpacker accommodations and surf access during certain seasons.
How to Get to Railay Beach #
Railay Beach is accessible only by boat. Long-tail boats run frequently from Ao Nang and Nopparat Thara (Ao Nang pier) and from Krabi Town piers to Railay; journey times are typically 10-20 minutes from Ao Nang and 20-30 minutes from Krabi Town depending on sea conditions. You reach the Ao Nang/Krabi departure points by road from Krabi Airport or Krabi Town (taxi, songthaew or private transfer).
Boats land at small piers in Railay East/West - once ashore it’s a short walk between beaches and the main beach areas (usually under 10-20 minutes depending on exact landing point).
Tips for Visiting Railay Beach #
- Plan to arrive mid- to late-afternoon or stay overnight on Railay - most day-trippers leave by late afternoon so sunset and the Railay viewpoint climb are far quieter then.
- Access Railay by longtail boat from Ao Nang (to East Railay) and walk the short path to West Railay; if you want the quieter beaches head to West Railay and Phra Nang in the late afternoon.
- Time any rock-climbing or the viewpoint hike for late afternoon to avoid the busiest morning climbing groups and to catch golden-hour light over the limestone cliffs.
Best Time to Visit Railay Beach #
Best from November to April when seas are calm and beach and climbing conditions are at their best.
