How to Get to Gulu
Gulu is served by its regional Gulu Airport (ULU) for domestic and charter flights, while international arrivals usually come via Entebbe International Airport (EBB) with onward road or occasional domestic flight connections. The town is also well linked by road: Gulu Main Bus Park is the centre for coaches and shared taxis to Kampala and other northern towns.
Gulu Airport (ULU): Gulu Airport is the city’s regional airport located a short drive from the centre; it handles charter and occasional scheduled domestic flights. From the airport to Gulu town centre you can take a motorcycle taxi (boda) for about UGX 3,000-6,000 and 5-10 minutes, or a private car/taxi for roughly UGX 15,000-30,000 and 10-20 minutes.
Entebbe International Airport (EBB): Entebbe is the main international gateway for northern Uganda. If you fly into Entebbe you can connect onward by a (when-available) domestic flight to Gulu (flight time ~1 hour; fares typically around UGX 200,000-400,000 one-way when scheduled). Alternatively, overland coaches and shared taxis run from Entebbe/Kampala to Gulu - see bus paragraph for road travel times and fares.
Train: Uganda currently has very limited passenger rail services and there are no regular passenger trains serving Gulu. Rail travel is not a practical option for reaching Gulu at present; rely on air or road connections instead.
Bus: Gulu Main Bus Park (the central bus/taxi park) is the hub for intercity coaches and shared taxis. Regular coach services and larger buses connect Gulu with Kampala, Lira, Kitgum and other northern towns; expect Gulu-Kampala coaches to take about 6-8 hours and cost roughly UGX 20,000-50,000 depending on operator and comfort level. Within the city, shared minibuses, taxis and boda-bodas handle short trips (fares often UGX 1,500-5,000).
How to Get Around Gulu
Gulu is best navigated with a mix of boda-bodas for short hops and shared taxis or coaches for longer distances - walking covers the compact centre well. For comfort or airport transfers, arrange a private taxi or hire a car; intercity travel is most reliable by coach when flights are not scheduled.
- Boda-boda (motorcycle taxi) (UGX 1,500-6,000) - Boda-bodas are the fastest and most flexible way to move around Gulu, especially for short hops or when traffic is heavy. Fares are negotiated per trip and are typically UGX 1,500-6,000 within town; agree the price before you ride and wear a helmet if possible. They are widely available but exercise normal safety caution after dark and for long-distance rides.
- Shared taxis / Minibuses (UGX 1,500-5,000) - Shared taxis and minibuses (often just called taxis) run fixed or semi-fixed routes around town and to nearby suburbs. Short trips are cheap (about UGX 1,500-5,000) and they're useful for reaching markets and residential areas not served by larger buses. Expect crowded conditions at peak times and limited evening service on some routes.
- Intercity coaches (UGX 20,000-50,000) - Coaches connect Gulu with Kampala, Lira, Kitgum and other major towns; departures are concentrated at Gulu Main Bus Park. Travel time to Kampala is generally 6-8 hours depending on road conditions; fares typically range from UGX 20,000 to UGX 50,000 depending on operator and comfort. Book ahead for busy holiday periods and choose reputable operators for more comfortable seats and luggage handling.
- Private taxi & car hire (UGX 15,000-40,000 (short trips); UGX 200,000-400,000/day (rental)) - Metered private taxis are available but not as common as in larger cities; short in-town fares are usually UGX 15,000-40,000 depending on distance and negotiation. Day car hire (often charged with a driver) is useful for excursions outside the town and typically runs around UGX 200,000-400,000 per day depending on vehicle and whether a driver is included. If you need reliable point-to-point transport or airport transfers, arranging a private car through your hotel or a reputable local agency is recommended.
- Bicycle / motorbike rental (UGX 10,000-40,000/day) - Bicycle and occasional motorbike rentals are available from local shops or guesthouses and are a cheap way to explore nearby neighbourhoods and quieter roads. Daily rental rates vary widely; expect roughly UGX 10,000-40,000 per day for a bicycle and higher for motorbikes. Check the condition of the bike, bring a lock, and avoid riding long distances on unpaved roads unless experienced.
- Walking - Central Gulu is compact and walkable for short visits - markets, restaurants and museums are clustered near the town centre. Walking is free and often the quickest way to get between nearby sights; wear sun protection and comfortable shoes, and be cautious on poorly lit streets after dark.
