How to Get to Masindi#
Masindi is most commonly reached by road from Kampala/Entebbe. Entebbe is the international gateway, and scheduled coaches and shared minibuses handle the onward trip to Masindi.
Entebbe International Airport (EBB): Entebbe is Uganda’s main international airport. To reach Masindi you typically travel by road from Kampala/Entebbe - there are no scheduled commercial flights into Masindi regularly. Domestic charter flights are possible but uncommon; most travellers continue overland.
Hoima / Kasese / Local airfields: There are small airfields in western Uganda used for charters; they do not offer regular scheduled services to Masindi. Overland coach travel from Kampala remains the standard route from air arrival points.
Train: Uganda’s rail services do not provide regular passenger services to Masindi; rail is not a practical option for most travellers to the town.
Bus: Regular coach and minibus services run from Kampala to Masindi (and onward to Hoima and other western destinations). Journey time from Kampala is typically 3.5-5 hours depending on traffic and route. Fares on reputable coach operators and scheduled buses are commonly in the range of 20,000-40,000 UGX; minibuses can be cheaper but less comfortable.

Road transport from Kampala/Entebbe is the standard way to reach Masindi. For local mobility, boda-bodas and taxis are convenient for short trips; coaches are the comfortable option for intercity travel.
- Intercity coach / Bus (Kampala-Masindi) (20,000-40,000 UGX) - Coaches and direct buses from Kampala to Masindi are the most reliable public option; they depart from major bus terminals in Kampala. Journey times are around 3.5-5 hours depending on traffic and stops. Use established operators for more comfortable, air‑conditioned coaches and secure luggage handling.
- Shared minivan / Matatu (10,000-25,000 UGX) - Shared minibuses (matatus) and vans run more frequently and can be cheaper, but are more crowded and less comfortable than coaches. They are useful if you need a flexible departure time, but expect quicker, less predictable journeys and multiple stops.
- Taxi / Private hire (200,000-500,000 UGX (depending on vehicle and negotiation)) - Private taxis or hires are available from Kampala or Entebbe for quicker door-to-door trips. They cost significantly more but are useful for groups or if you have timed connections. Agree fares and route beforehand; reputable hotels can arrange transfers.
- Boda-boda (motorbike taxi) (1,000-5,000 UGX) - Within Masindi town, boda-bodas are the fastest way to move around for short trips and market runs. They are inexpensive but carry safety risks-wear a helmet if provided and avoid at night. Negotiate fares in advance for short hops.
