Glacier National Park in northwest Montana protects a rugged section of the northern Rocky Mountains and sits along the United States-Canada border. The park is noted for dramatic alpine scenery, numerous lakes and remnant glaciers that carved deep valleys and cirques.

The primary scenic corridor is the Going-to-the-Sun Road, an engineering route of about 50 miles that traverses the park and passes through Logan Pass at roughly 6,646 feet elevation. Popular activities include day hikes from trailheads at Logan Pass, boat trips on park lakes and multi-day backpacking in the park’s interior.

Glacial action over the last ice ages created the park’s steep valleys and numerous lakes; modern glaciers in the park are smaller than a century ago but remain a defining feature of the landscape. Park management emphasizes seasonal access, visitor safety at high elevations and preservation of fragile alpine ecosystems.

The park lies in northwest Montana with gateway communities at West Glacier and St. Mary; the Going-to-the-Sun Road connects the west and east entrances and is the main route for park visitors.

  • Road seasonality: The Going-to-the-Sun Road is seasonal and typically closed in winter and early spring due to snow; check current opening dates before planning a trip.
  • Weather and preparation: Logan Pass is a high-elevation starting point for popular hikes and can experience rapidly changing weather; allocate extra time and layers for visits there.

What to See #

  • Going-to-the-Sun Road: Going-to-the-Sun Road, a roughly 50-mile trans-mountain highway that crosses the park and provides primary scenic access across Glacier's Lake McDonald valley and Logan Pass.
  • Logan Pass: Logan Pass, the highest point on the road at about 6,646 feet (2,026 m), with trails and a visitor center serving as the start for high-country hikes.
  • Many Glacier: Many Glacier, a northeast sector of the park known for its concentration of lakes, peaks and trail access to classic hikes and boat-to-hike routes.
