How to Get to Fort Portal
Fort Portal is most commonly reached overland from Kampala, with international arrivals using Entebbe International Airport (EBB) before continuing by road. There are no regular commercial flights into Fort Portal, and passenger rail service is not available, so buses, minibuses and hired vehicles are the normal ways in.
Entebbe International Airport (EBB): Entebbe is the main international gateway for Uganda. From EBB the usual route to Fort Portal is by road: take an airport taxi or shuttle to Kampala (35-60 minutes, roughly UGX 40,000-80,000 / US$11-22 by taxi depending on vehicle and time of day), then transfer to an intercity bus or minibus bound for Fort Portal (see bus details below). There are no regular scheduled commercial flights into Fort Portal itself, so expect at least one road leg on arrival.
Train: Uganda currently has no reliable, regular passenger rail service connecting Entebbe/Kampala with Fort Portal, so rail is not a practical option for this route; travel is by road instead.
Bus: Intercity buses and minibuses (matatus) run from Kampala to Fort Portal multiple times per day. Services typically depart from Kampala bus parks/terminals and take about 4-5 hours depending on traffic and stops. Fares are roughly UGX 20,000-35,000 (about US$5-9) for standard buses; minibuses may be a bit cheaper but can be less comfortable. Buy tickets at the bus company office or at the terminal before boarding.
How to Get Around Fort Portal
Fort Portal is a compact, road-connected town best navigated by a mix of boda-boda for short hops and hired cars or buses for longer journeys. If you want flexibility for day trips to parks and crater lakes, hire a car/driver; for everyday moving around the centre, walking and motorcycle taxis are the most efficient options.
- Minibuses / Matatus (UGX 2,000-35,000) - Local and intercity minibuses (matatus) are the most economical way to travel from Kampala and neighboring towns to Fort Portal and for short trips around the region. Expect frequent departures from Kampala terminals; rides within town are cheap but can be crowded. Ask at the bus park for a direct Fort Portal service and confirm the fare before boarding.
- Boda-boda (motorcycle taxi) (UGX 2,000-10,000) - Boda-bodas are ubiquitous and the quickest way to move inside Fort Portal or reach nearby viewpoints and guesthouses. Short rides in town typically cost a few thousand UGX - always agree the price before you ride and ask for a helmet if available. Useful for narrow roads where cars can't easily go, but keep luggage light and ride cautiously in wet conditions.
- Taxi / Private car (UGX 10,000-60,000) - Taxis and private car hires offer more comfort and are ideal for airport transfers, group travel, or trips with luggage. Expect fares within town to be higher than boda-bodas; negotiate a fixed price or ask for the meter where available. For day trips (for example to Kibale National Park) many drivers charge a daily rate and can act as informal guides.
- Car hire (with driver) (UGX 200,000-400,000/day) - Hiring a car with a driver is common for excursions to national parks and crater lake areas around Fort Portal; local agencies and some lodges can arrange vehicles. A hired car with driver for a day trip is practical because drivers know the roads and local conditions; ask about insurance and fuel policy up front.
- Walking - Fort Portal town centre is compact and very walkable-most guesthouses, markets and restaurants are within a short stroll. Walking is the best way to explore the town, visit the central market and access nearby walking trails; wear comfortable shoes and be mindful of sun and occasional rain.
