How to Get to Mbarara

Mbarara is reachable by a small regional airport (Mbarara Airport, MBQ) and by road from Kampala and Entebbe (the latter via Kampala). The international gateway is Entebbe International Airport (EBB); most long-distance travellers use buses, private shuttles or hire cars to reach Mbarara.

By Air

Mbarara Airport (MBQ): Mbarara Airport is a small regional airstrip serving charter and occasional scheduled domestic flights. The airport is about 5-8 minutes (≈3-5 km) from Mbarara town centre; local taxis or boda‑boda are the normal option - expect roughly UGX 5,000-15,000 and a 10-20 minute transfer depending on traffic and luggage.

Entebbe International Airport (EBB): Entebbe is Uganda’s main international gateway. There are no regular direct scheduled commercial flights into Mbarara from Entebbe; most visitors travel by road or book a charter. Road transfers and coach services from Kampala/Entebbe to Mbarara typically take 4-6 hours by bus (see Bus below). A private shuttle/taxi from Entebbe to Mbarara will be significantly more expensive (several hundred thousand UGX) and takes about 5-7 hours including the drive to Kampala.

By Train & Bus

Train: There is no regular intercity passenger rail service connecting Mbarara to Kampala or other cities as of 2024. Uganda’s rail network is largely freight-focused and passenger services have not been re-established on main routes to Mbarara, so travel by road is the practical option.

Bus: Regular minibuses (matatus) and private coach operators run between Kampala and Mbarara, arriving at and departing from various coach and taxi parks in Kampala (central taxi/bus parks) and Mbarara Bus Park / Mbarara Central Taxi Park in town. Typical travel time from Kampala to Mbarara is about 4-6 hours depending on traffic and road conditions; fares generally range from about UGX 15,000-40,000 for standard coaches and minibuses. Coaches offer more comfort and fixed schedules; matatus are cheaper and more frequent but less comfortable. Check departure points and operators in Kampala when planning.

How to Get Around Mbarara

Mbarara is best navigated by a mix of walking and short boda‑boda or taxi rides inside town, with matatus or private coaches for longer journeys to Kampala. For comfort and predictable schedules choose a reputable coach or private transfer; for quick, cheap local trips boda‑bodas and shared minibuses work well.
