Representative figures from each country's largest city. High / low are average daily temperatures (°C); “Feels” allows for humidity.

Iberia (Spain & Portugal, including the Balearics and Canary influence)

Late spring brings warming days and the first genuine heat spells to southern Spain - by May Barcelona, Valencia and Lisbon often see mid-20s°C, and fields of almond and olive blossom scent rural routes. The Pyrenees and Picos still hold snow at altitude, offering hiking without peak-summer crowds. Travellers should expect increasing tourists along the Costa Brava and Algarve; sunscreen and a light hat become essentials.

The British Isles & Atlantic France (United Kingdom, Ireland, northern/Atlantic France, Benelux coasts)

A sharp shift to spring-like brightness can occur in March: days lengthen and southern England and the Low Countries see early bulbs and cherry blossom, especially in parks around London and Amsterdam. Atlantic storms still arrive frequently on the west coast, so ferry and flight disruptions are possible. Shoulder-season lodging bargains appear; pack light layers and a raincoat and time outdoor excursions for pockets of dry weather.

The Alps & Central Europe (Switzerland, Austria, southern Germany, Slovenia, northern Italy)

By March the lowlands begin to see earlier spring warmth while alpine elevations keep winter conditions - lenticels of snow linger for late-season skiing in high resorts and avalanche risk still needs attention. Cities such as Munich and Ljubljana warm during sunny spells, making terrace cafés tempting between showers. Trail openings in the valleys make for good shoulder-season hiking if you watch local trail-status updates.

The Mediterranean & Adriatic Coast (Italy south of the Po, southern France’s Riviera, Croatia, Greece, Malta)

Late winter-warmth arrives in March with olive groves in bloom across Puglia and Crete, and tourist towns beginning to open for the season. Rome and Florence become hospitable for walking tours with daytime temperatures usually in the mid-to-high teens, while the ferry season in the Adriatic starts to pick up. Pack a mix of light clothes and a warm jumper for chilly early mornings and breezy island crossings.

Northern & Eastern Europe (Scandinavia, the Baltics, Poland and the western edge of Russia’s European plain)

March signals increasing daylight and often the best winter-spring crossover for snow reliability in mountain regions while cities start to thaw: Stockholm and Helsinki shift toward slushier streets and café terraces appear on sunny days. Northern lights can still be visible early in the month in Arctic locations. Travellers should plan for mixed conditions and carry both warm clothing and waterproof boots.
