How to Get to Coquí

Coquí (Salinas) is reached mainly via Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in San Juan, with Ponce's Mercedita Airport (PSE) often closer for southern destinations. Ground transport options are taxis, rideshares, car rentals and regional buses/shared taxis; renting a car is the most practical option for flexible travel.

By Air

Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU): The island’s main airport in Carolina / San Juan. From SJU you can take a taxi or rideshare to Salinas; taxis to south-coast towns typically run approximately USD 60-90 and take about 50-75 minutes to reach Salinas (traffic dependent). Rental cars are widely available at the airport (typical daily rates USD 30-70) and are the most flexible option for reaching Salinas.

Mercedita Airport, Ponce (PSE): Ponce’s airport is closer to Salinas than San Juan for many southern destinations. Taxis from PSE into Salinas typically cost around USD 25-40 and take about 20-35 minutes. Car rental desks operate at PSE as well and driving from PSE to Salinas is straightforward along PR-52/PR-3.

By Train & Bus

Train: Puerto Rico does not have intercity passenger rail; the island’s urban rail is Tren Urbano in the San Juan metro area (stations such as Sagrado Corazón, Bayamón). Tren Urbano will not take you to Salinas-use it only if you need to move inside greater San Juan before heading south by road.

Bus: Intercity travel to Salinas is generally by private intercity buses or shared taxis (carros públicos) from San Juan bus terminals. There is no single island-wide scheduled coach brand covering every route; expect multi-step journeys from San Juan using buses or colectivos and final legs by taxi. Using a rental car or private transfer is usually faster and more predictable for reaching Salinas.

How to Get Around Coquí #

Coquí’s central area is small and largely walkable - you can reach local shops and eateries on foot for short trips. For exploring beyond the barrio, a private car is the most practical option, as services are spread out. Public transit between towns is limited; there are occasional shared taxis and municipal buses but schedules can be sparse. Taxis and ride-hailing work better from larger nearby towns, so carry some cash and plan connections in advance.

Budget
Ponce - $40-90/night
Coquí (Salinas) has very limited local lodging. Budget stays are usually in Ponce, a short drive north from Salinas.
