Cook Island, South Sandwich Islands

Cook Island is a small, uninhabited island in the South Sandwich Islands, a remote subantarctic chain administered as part of the British Overseas Territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. The island sits at approximately 59.45°S, 27.17°W and is volcanic in origin.

The island offers steep volcanic cliffs and coastal rock important for seabirds and marine mammals rather than facilities for visitors. There are no permanent structures or services; any landing is typically for scientific or tightly controlled expedition visits.

The South Sandwich Islands were charted and named during early exploration of the southern oceans; Cook Island is one of many small islands in this isolated archipelago and has seen little permanent human modification. It remains primarily of interest for geology and wildlife observations.

Geographically it lies in the southern Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean, well south of the Falkland Islands and southeast of South Georgia. The nearest permanently inhabited administrative centers are many hundreds of kilometres away and access is by sea only.
