High / low are average daily temperatures (°C). “Feels” reflects how hot or cold it feels, allowing for humidity.
Northern Sahara (Faya-Largeau and the sand seas)
By October the Sahara northern plains are noticeably cooler; daytime highs are often in the high 20s to low 30s °C and nights are pleasant. This is the start of the primary travel season for northern Chad: landscapes are easier to cover, dust levels drop, and camps stay comfortable after sunset. Expect increased local movement as towns prepare for the cooler months and secure supplies for the winter.
Tibesti Mountains (Bardaï and Emi Koussi)
October offers cool, dry days and very cold nights at altitude - ideal for photography and exploration of ancient cliff carvings and remote oases. The weather is typically settled and roads over passes are stable, although isolated wind gusts can still kick up sand on exposed tracks. Pack warm layers for evening camps and a windproof for the passes, where gusts can be unexpectedly strong.
Ennedi Plateau & Northeast (Fada and rock arch country)
October delivers much more comfortable days and mild nights - an excellent time for extended treks across rock arches and for photography when the low sun brings texture to the cliffs. The likelihood of disruptive sandstorms is low and access to water sources used by nomadic camps is more predictable. Pack light warm layers for evening and expect more local movement as herders shift camp in cooler weather.
Central Sahel & Lake Fitri region (Batha, Abéché fringe)
October is the dry-season return: afternoons dry out and dust returns in small amounts, but overall conditions are comfortable for overland routes and camps. Lake Fitri’s shoreline recedes, exposing mudflats that attract waders and make good, if messy, birding. Travelers will find fewer insects than in peak rainy months and can move more freely, though some remote tracks may still show deep ruts.
Lake Chad & Western Chad (N’Djamena, Lac region, Bol)
October is drier and more comfortable; temperatures moderate and dust returns in small amounts, but overall conditions are excellent for travel between N’Djamena and lakeside villages. Lake Chad’s exposed shores create rich fishing grounds and show evidence of the lake’s seasonal variability; boat travel is still possible but requires local knowledge as channels shift. This month is convenient for cultural visits and river excursions.
Southern Sudanian Zone & Salamat (Moundou, Sarh, Zakouma area)
October is the transition back to dry season: afternoons dry out and the bush remains green while animal concentrations begin to reform around shrinking waterholes. Travel conditions rapidly improve and lodges in the Salamat and surrounding areas reopen more reliably. Bring mosquito protection for early evenings and light layers for cooling mornings as humidity declines.
