Northern Sahara (Faya-Largeau and the sand seas)

July brings the height of the North African hot season in the Sahara, with frequent temperatures well above 40 °C in exposed locations and little chance of rain. Sandstorms driven by convective winds become more frequent in the late afternoons and can ground small aircraft and delay overland convoys. If you must travel, schedule activities at first light and accept that midday will be oppressive and dusty.

Tibesti Mountains (Bardaï and Emi Koussi)

July heats the lower approaches significantly; shaded gorges provide the only real relief during the day and carry the scent of rare, hardy shrubs. There is a small uptick in afternoon convective activity in the greater Sahara, but the Tibesti’s altitude usually prevents heavy rainfall - flash floods are uncommon but possible in tight valleys. Traveling requires careful water planning and travel at dawn to avoid stifling afternoons.

Ennedi Plateau & Northeast (Fada and rock arch country)

July is hot and dusty; daytime temperatures are oppressive on the plateau and canyon bottoms offer the only relief, which can get crowded by experienced groups seeking shade. Afternoon convective cells, if present, can bring brief but intense downpours that carve fresh runoff channels in the soft sandstone - these can briefly close minor tracks. If you visit now, expect logistical constraints, and keep vehicles well-maintained against sand intrusion.

Central Sahel & Lake Fitri region (Batha, Abéché fringe)

July sits in the full rainy season with heavy, often afternoon, downpours that can swell seasonal rivers and make secondary roads impassable - expect major delays. Vegetation rapidly greens, and ephemeral pools provide exciting birding and wildlife watching, but also an uptick in biting insects. For travelers, plan fewer long drives, travel with a capable 4x4 and allow extra days for logistics.

Lake Chad & Western Chad (N’Djamena, Lac region, Bol)

July is in the heart of the rainy season: heavy, often daily downpours produce rapid changes in water levels on Lake Chad and its reed beds, and N’Djamena experiences intermittent urban flooding during intense storms. Boat travel becomes essential in places where roads are washed out, but strong currents and floating debris make it riskier. Pack waterproofs, insect protection and allow extra travel time during this month.

Southern Sudanian Zone & Salamat (Moundou, Sarh, Zakouma area)

July remains in the heart of the rainy season; persistent cloud cover, regular downpours and saturated tracks make remote travel slow and sometimes impossible without local 4x4 knowledge. Rivers swell and small boat trips may be preferable to road travel in parts, but safety concerns over currents and submerged hazards increase. Pack full rainproofing, high-quality mosquito nets, and allow flexible itineraries.
