High / low are average daily temperatures (°C). “Feels” reflects how hot or cold it feels, allowing for humidity.
Northern Sahara (Faya-Largeau and the sand seas)
Bright, dry mornings in January make long desert drives tolerable; daytime temperatures are pleasant (mid-20s °C) while nights can be sharply cool, often dipping toward single digits. Faya-Largeau is quiet and travel logistics are easier than in the wet season back south, but expect strong sun and dust that will fade vehicle paint and scratch camera lenses. Pack layered clothing for cold nights and a strong sunhat and sunglasses for the blazing daytime light.
Tibesti Mountains (Bardaï and Emi Koussi)
Clear, crisp mornings in January reveal the volcanic ridges around Bardaï and Emi Koussi; daytime sun can feel surprisingly warm but temperatures drop sharply after sunset. High-altitude nights around Emi Koussi may approach freezing and occasional frost is possible on sheltered high plateaus. Expect very little precipitation this month, so routes are firm but cold - good for trekking high ridgelines if you have warm sleeping gear.
Ennedi Plateau & Northeast (Fada and rock arch country)
Crystal-clear skies in January make the Ennedi’s sandstone arches and narrow canyons superb for photography; daytime is pleasantly warm, evenings cool and insects minimal. The plateau is dry so tracks are firm, and small nomadic camps around Fada move slowly in search of grazing, making cultural encounters possible. Pack warm layers for nights and a good headlamp for canyon camps - temperatures can dip quickly after sunset.
Central Sahel & Lake Fitri region (Batha, Abéché fringe)
January mornings around Batha are cool and dry, with dusty Harmattan breezes easing and the sun warming the afternoons into comfortable territory. Daylight is ideal for exploring Lake Fitri’s margins and the surrounding open savanna while roads are firm; however, mosquitoes are still scarce so nights are pleasant for camping. Pack a light sweater for crisp evenings and a dust mask if you’re prone to breathing irritants.
Lake Chad & Western Chad (N’Djamena, Lac region, Bol)
January mornings in N’Djamena and the Lac region feel fresh with low humidity; daytime highs are pleasant and river breezes off the Chari provide relief. Lake Chad’s shoreline is at one of its lower seasonal points, exposing mudflats around Bol and seasonal fishermen’s camps and making for interesting day trips by shallow-draft boat. Nights are cool; bring a light jacket for riverside dining and expect easier road travel.
Southern Sudanian Zone & Salamat (Moundou, Sarh, Zakouma area)
January is comfortably cool and dry in the south: mornings are crisp and wildlife in parks such as near Zakouma may be easier to spot as animals congregate around permanent water. Daytime temperatures are warm but not oppressive, making game drives and boat trips along the smaller southern rivers pleasant. Nights can be cool, so a light jacket is useful if you’re camping in the bush.
