Northern Sahara (Faya-Largeau and the sand seas)

The pre-monsoon surge in April brings real heat: daytime temperatures routinely climb into the high 30s and low 40s °C. Windier afternoons increase the chance of haboob-like dust squalls that can suddenly reduce visibility; camps on dune crests become unpleasant in the mid-afternoon. For overland travelers this is one of the toughest months - travel at dawn, avoid strenuous activity in the afternoon, and ensure your drinking water and cooling systems are reliable.

Tibesti Mountains (Bardaï and Emi Koussi)

April sees a steady rise in daytime heat on exposed plateaus; temperatures on lower ridges become hot while higher elevations remain temperate. Afternoon thermals can develop, pushing dust into the gorges and sometimes making short-term travel unpleasant; mornings remain your best window for long treks. This month is often chosen by overland expeditions before temperatures peak further down in the desert.

Ennedi Plateau & Northeast (Fada and rock arch country)

April marks the approach of intense heat on the plateau; sun-exposed summits can be blistering and midday activity becomes unpleasant, so plan hikes for early or late hours. The first strong northerly dust events can occur and may temporarily coat rock outcrops, dulling colors until a rare shower clears the air. Travel is still possible with appropriate timing and water management, but avoid pushing at midday.

Central Sahel & Lake Fitri region (Batha, Abéché fringe)

April accelerates the heating: daytime temperatures can be very hot in exposed areas and shade under acacia trees becomes precious. The first convective clouds may appear on the horizon but widespread rain hasn’t started; Lake Fitri’s shoreline is low but still offers birdlife at dawn and dusk. Expect fewer international visitors and bring high-SPF sun protection, plenty of water and a plan for vehicle cooling.

Lake Chad & Western Chad (N’Djamena, Lac region, Bol)

April is the pre-monsoon heat peak around the lake basin - daytime heat becomes stifling and dust haze increases, particularly during strong northeasterly winds. Visibility over the lake can suffer, and small local storms are still rare; boats may sit idle in mid-day heat. Travelers should favor morning river cruises, keep hydrated, and expect fewer long-distance road trips due to strain on vehicles from heat and dust.

Southern Sudanian Zone & Salamat (Moundou, Sarh, Zakouma area)

April is hot and dry in the south, with temperatures pushing into the high 30s °C on open plains and shade becoming a premium at midday. The build-up to the rains creates dramatic skies and some early, isolated showers may appear late in the month - if they do, vegetation can suddenly look fresher. Travel remains manageable but expect increasing insects and warm nights for camping.
