Northern Sahara (Faya-Largeau and the sand seas)

February remains cool and dry across the Saharan plains and visibility is often excellent for photography of dunes and salt flats. Winds are typically lighter than later in spring, so sandstorms are less common - good for visiting oueds and isolated wells around the Borkou basin. Bring warm layers for night camps and plan for remote travel: services and fuel are scarce outside the main towns.

Tibesti Mountains (Bardaï and Emi Koussi)

February remains one of the driest months in the Tibesti, and with the north African high firmly in place wind can strip moisture from the air leaving a dry, thin atmosphere. Sun-exposed slopes warm quickly but shaded gorges remain biting cold and there’s still a small chance of light snow or sleet on the highest peaks. Logistics are easier than in the wet season elsewhere, but the terrain demands a local guide and proper cold-weather kit at night.

Ennedi Plateau & Northeast (Fada and rock arch country)

February continues with low humidity and clear sunlight that brings out the ochre and gold of the rock formations; mornings can be brisk and a fleece is necessary for dawn departures. Access is straightforward on rock-stable tracks, and fewer dust storms than later in spring mean good visibility in the canyons. This is a favored window for walking the arches and for archaeology-minded travelers wanting to study petroglyphs without the summer heat.

Central Sahel & Lake Fitri region (Batha, Abéché fringe)

February is dry with streaks of warm sun that tempt longer drives out of Abéché or east toward the Ennedi approach roads; daytime heat is moderate and evenings remain pleasantly cool. Dust levels can still be noticeable early in the month, but visibility often improves through February, opening great windows for landscape photography. Travelers can enjoy long days on relatively reliable tracks - bring sun protection and sturdy boots for dusty tracks.

Lake Chad & Western Chad (N’Djamena, Lac region, Bol)

February continues the dry, clear pattern - mornings crisp and full of bird calls along the Chari and into the upturned shores of Lake Chad. Roads are firm and market life in N’Djamena is active as traders move goods with little weather disruption. If you want to boat to nearby islands, this is a practical time: water levels are low but navigation is straightforward and insects are still moderate.

Southern Sudanian Zone & Salamat (Moundou, Sarh, Zakouma area)

February stays dry and is a favored month for safari-style travel - roads are firm and the bush is less overgrown, improving visibility for spotting elephants and antelope near water holes. Local towns like Moundou and Sarh are active with markets and travel services; early morning game drives are particularly rewarding. Bring sun protection for daytime and layers for cooler pre-dawn starts.
