Angkor Borei District
Historical Site District and archaeological area with ancient Khmer remains
On the Mekong’s lower plains, Angkor Borei contains archaeological ruins from early Khmer polities and a small museum; visitors come for field excavations, local museums, and riverside ruins that predate Angkorian kingship.
Angkor Borei is an archaeological site and modern district in southern Cambodia, in Takeo Province, located on the low-lying plain beside the Bassac River. It preserves visible earthworks and structural remains from an early historic urban settlement.
The site contains earthen embankments, moated enclosures and scattered brick mounds that archaeologists associate with the early state-level societies of the region, commonly referred to in historical sources as Funan and later Chenla. Material and structural evidence at the site dates primarily to the 1st through 7th centuries CE.
Archaeological investigation has been undertaken by Cambodian and international teams, documenting settlement patterns, waterways and artifacts that illustrate Angkor Borei’s role in regional trade and riverine networks. The site sits in the Mekong Delta landscape about 60 kilometres south of Phnom Penh and is part of a wider cluster of pre-Angkorian sites in the area.
- Early historic dating: Archaeological materials and earthworks at the site date mainly to the early historic period of Southeast Asia, roughly the 1st to 7th centuries CE, associated with the polity often called Funan.
- Location relative to Phnom Penh: Located beside the Bassac River system in southern Cambodia, the site lies roughly 60 kilometres south of Phnom Penh and forms part of the southern Mekong Delta archaeological landscape.
