History & Culture of Prasat Neang Khmau#
The 10th-century temple of Prasat Neang Khmau, the “Temple of the Black Lady”, makes an easy addition to a day trip taking in Phnom Chisor or Angkor Borei and Phnom Da. It stands just off National Road 2, a little north of the turn-off to Phnom Chisor.
The temple is more memorable for its legend than its architecture. In one version a “black lady” was banished from her kingdom for her promiscuous behaviour; in another a young woman was locked away within the walls to preserve her chastity. Alongside a few decent lintel carvings and pleasant grounds, which include a small school, a statue of the black lady is said to stand in a small tower beside the ancient shrines, though the chamber is usually locked.
